Senate Probes Alleged Customs’ Seizure Of Bulletproof Car Linked To Saraki

Following the alleged seizure of a bulletproof car purportedly owned by Senate President Bukola Saraki, the senate has reacted by directing its committee on ethics and privileges to investigate the alleged seizure.

The car was reportedly seized by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) of which comptroller-general, Hameed Ali, had been locked in a face-off with the senate.

Recall the red chamber had summoned Ali to appear before it in uniform over the customs’ planned enforcement of duty on old cars.

But the customs chief appeared before the senate in civilian attire. He was subsequently ordered out of the chamber with an order to get a uniform.

However, there were insinuations that the senate was being hard on Ali because the customs had seized a sport utility vehicle (SUV) of Saraki.

On Tuesday, Ali Ndume, a senator from Borno state, raised a point of order asking the upper legislative chamber to investigate the allegation.

He said Nigerians were insulting the senate over the matter.

He also asked the senate to investigate allegations of certificate forgery against Dino Melaye, a senator from Kogi west.

After listening to the motion, deputy senate president Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the session, referred it to the committee on ethics and privileges, and he directed it to submit its report in four weeks.

Senator-Ndume

Due to the ‘un-parliamemtary’ statements attributed to former Senate leader, Senator Ali Ndume, Senate president Bukola Saraki and his loyalists are said to be hatching a plot for his downfall.

Senator Dino Melaye is said to be at the forefront of the movement for the suspension of the lawmaker representing Borno-south senatorial district

Daily Sun reports that barring any last minute changes, Senators have concluded plans to suspend Ali Ndume from the upper house over what they described as ‘un-parliamentary’ utterances made by the lawmaker from Borno south.

Plans were reportedly made in the camp of the Senate President Bukola Saraki and another senator, who is seen to be neutral, has been approached to move a motion on the floor of the Senate to that effect.

Senators loyal to Saraki are said to already be reaching out to their colleagues who are yet to join the train and multiple sources in the know said Ndume’s suspension may happen any time soon.

Chairman of the Federal Capital Territory committee Senator Dino Melaye is believed to be leading the attack on Ndume.

Ndume reportedly incurred the wrath of Saraki and his supporters when he protested the rejection of the acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Ibrahim Magu by the Senate.

Recall that Ndume had accused Saraki of erring by accepting a new report not signed by the Director-General of Department of State Services Lawal Daura.

He also queried Saraki for not reading a similar letter written to the Senate President by an Assistant Comptroller General of Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) on behalf of the Col. Hameed Ali despite accepting the one from the DSS.

Ndume, after the second rejection of Magu, granted several press interviews where he openly criticized Saraki and the entire Senate for rejecting Magu.

He also on Tuesday, March 21, moved a motion on the floor of the house requesting that allegations of misuse of office and certificate forgery against Saraki and Melaye respectively should be investigated to ensure that there was no abuse of legislative privileges by them.

Bill To Ban Tribal Marks Passes Second Reading In The Senate

tribal marks billA bill seeking to stop facial mutilation under the guise of cultural and tribal marks yesterday passed through second reading in the Senate.

Sponsored by Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi West), the bill is fully named ‘A Bill for an Act to provide for the Prohibition of Facial Mutilation, the Offences, Prosecution and Punishment of offenders and the protection of victims under threat of facial mutilation and to provide for other related matters.’

Melaye while presenting the lead debate, said the era where facial marks were needed for identification with certain affiliations are long gone, as the popularity and acceptance of the practice continues to wane.

“These tribal marks have become emblems of disfiguration and have hindered many situations of life. Some have developed low self-esteem, they are most times treated with scorn and ridicule. The reactions of people who interact with them on interpersonal basis somehow dampen their spirit or lower their self-esteem. They are reduced in most cases to laughing stocks in the communities and called several horrible names,” Melaye argued.

“Long before the awareness programmes on AIDS, many innocent people, mostly children, who were subjected to tribal marks laceration, had inadvertently been infected with the deadly HIV virus. Sharp instruments used by the locales to inscribe the tribal marks were not sterilized, thus exposing kids, even adults, to the risk of HIV/ AIDS,” he added.

Contributing to the debate, the Senate Whip, Senator Olusola Adeyeye (Osun Central) said the practice brings reproach to the African race, all around the world.

“We must stop it, and we must ensure stiff penalties, not just for the parents but for the so-called local surgeons who administer the marks. African legislatures must stop it. All African countries must ban this practice in the name of tribal marks,” he said.

Adeyeye displaying the mutilations on his arm, disclosed that he was a victim of the practice, when his grandmother forcefully took him to a local surgeon who made the cuts, while his father was away.
My father did not want any of us to have marks, he said, and recalled the pains of being cut with a knife without any form anaesthesia.

The Prestigious Harvard University has denied claims made by Senator Dino Melaye that he got a degree from the institution.

Melaye is currently facing a certificate scandal, after it was reported that he did not graduate from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Kaduna as he claimed.

On Tuesday, Senator Ali Ndume raised a point of order asking the Senate to probe the allegations that Melaye did not graduate from ABU.

In response, Melaye insisted that not only did he graduate from ABU, he also has a degree from Harvard.

He said: “I am here to respond to the issue raised by the Boko Haram suspect (and) senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Ali Ndume.

“I want to say, to me, it is a welcome development. Democracy is about investigation and no senator is above investigation. To me, it is a welcome development and it will finally clear the air on all the malicious and vindictive allegations.

“To say that I did not graduate from ABU is to say that I am not a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. ABU is a very prestigious university in this country and it is not possible for one to be running a master’s programme in the university when one did not graduate from a university. I have successfully completed one and I am doing the second one.

“I want to announce that this is the eighth degree that I am pursuing. I am also a graduate of University of Abuja, where I did Masters in Policy Analysis. I am a graduate of London School of Economics and Political Science. I am also a graduate of Harvard University. The course I am pursuing now will make it my eighth degree.”

However, Harvard University explained that Melaye only did a one-week development course in 2016.

Their tweet read: “Contrary to claims by@dino_melaye that he acquired academic degree at @Harvard the university said there was nothing like that.‎

“@Harvard’s Kennedy School Executive Education said @dino_melaye only attended a professional dev course that lasted 1 week in 2016.”

US Bans Tablets And Laptops On Flights From 8 Muslim Countries [See List Of Countries]

The United States warned Tuesday that extremists plan to target planes with bombs hidden in electronic devices, and banned carrying them on flights from 10 airports in Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa.

The Department of Homeland of Security on Tuesday announced new carry-on restrictions that prevent U.S.-bound passengers from eight Middle Eastern countries from carrying personal electronic devices larger than a smartphone in the passenger cabin.

The TSA order, which does not have a stated end date, covers laptops, tablets, e-readers, cameras, portable DVD players, and handheld gaming devices larger than a smartphone. According to the “emergency amendment”, such forbidden devices must be stowed in checked baggage.

The list of Muslim-majority countries includes Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, Morocco, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. The nine airlines impacted by the order are Royal Jordanian, EgyptAir, Turkish Airlines, Saudia, Kuwait Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Qatar Airways, Emirates and Ethiad Airways.

If the airlines fail to implement the changes within 96 hours, the Federal Aviation Authority could revoke their clearance certificates, which would ban them from flying into U.S. airspace. No U.S. airline is affected by the ban because none currently operates direct flights to and from the above destinations.

U.S. Administration aides declined to comment on any new or specific threats, but said the government had made the decision based on evaluated intelligence suggesting some terrorist organizations have considered using consumer electronics as a way to hide explosives and smuggle them onto passenger planes. It’s not yet clear if or how this ruling relates to the Trump administration’s revised travel ban, which is currently being challenged by U.S. courts.

The full airport ban list announced by the Department of Homeland Security includes: Queen Alia International Airport (AMM), Cairo International Airport (CAI), Ataturk International Airport (IST), King Abdul-Aziz International Airport (JED), King Khalid International Airport (RUH), Kuwait International Airport (KWI), Mohammed V Airport (CMN), Hamad International Airport (DOH), Dubai International Airport (DXB), and Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH).

Suspects Responsible For The Clash

As the dust begin to settle in Sabo Community, located in the ancient town of Ile-Ife, Osun State, the community where an inter ethnic clash between Yorubas and Hausas took place, residents have continued counting their losses.

It was reported that the lingering crisis between the factions of National Union of Road Transport Workers, (NURTW), Abuja Branch and the Hausa people prolonged the clash.

Following the attacks, former Governor of Kano State, Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso with Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola in company visited Ile-Ife for on-the-spot assessment of the crisis.

To set the record straight, below is the sequence of events that rocked the ancient town 15 years after Modakeke war;

1.) An argument ensued between a Yoruba woman called Kubura and a Hausa man when the latter forcefully attempted to keep his luggage in her shop at Sabo Market, but the woman refused and her refusal got rewarded with a slap.

2.) The Yoruba youths obviously angered by the action, reportedly descended on him for laying his hands on a woman, beat him to stupor and locked him up in the shop.

3.) Seeing the attack on one of their own, the Hausa people around, retailiated, hence escalating to fight to orgy of violence marked by killings and destruction of lives and properties.

4.) The leader of Hausa community in Ile Ife, the Seriki Hausa, Alhaji Mahmud Muhammed invited the police when the crisis degenerated, with a combined team of heavily armed soldiers and operatives of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) drafted to maintain peace, but the devastation continued unabated, leaving several casualties before nomalcy was finally restored.

5.) With a view to ensuring peace and security of lives and property, the Osun State Government immediately imposed a two-day curfew on Thursday, March 9 from 6.00pm to 7.00 am and was to be in force till Friday, March 10.

6.) Governor Rauf Aregbesola while addressing people at the palace of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi after visiting the scene of the incident to assess the magnitude expressed deep regrets over the incident before the Ooni called for a one minute silence for those who lost their lives in the fracas and for sustainable peace in the town and the entire country.

7.) Hausas in their hundreds with their children, bag and baggage as well as several other personal effects still fled the town for fear of further attacks by the Yorubas.

8.) However, Hausa leader, Alhaji Buhari Halum disclosed that Governor Rauf Aregbesola had made a donation of 5 million naira and 14 bags of rice to the victims and that some kind-hearted indigenes have been assisting them in various ways.

9.) On March 10, aggrieved people trooped to the Sabo Central Mosque to observe the Friday prayers with “Ife Has Finished Us” inscription conspicuously pasted in front of the mosque.”

10.) The Police on Monday, March 20 revealed that 46 people lost their lives, 96 injured while 20 suspects linked to the clash were paraded before Journalists.

However, economic activities have gradually picked up in the other parts of the town, with people going about their normal businesses.
