The Nigeria Police have again arrested the national commandant of the Nigerian Peace Corps, Dickson Akoh.

PREMIUM TIMES reports that the 43-year-old Akoh was taken to a facility belonging to the police special anti-robbery squad in Abuja hours after turning himself in.

It was gathered that Akoh arrived at about 5.40pm, where he had a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of CID, officer in charge of the SARS and DC of SARS.

The arrest came three weeks after the police, in a joint operation with the Nigerian Army and the State Security Service, stormed the Peace Corps head office in Abuja and arrested Mr. Akoh and several others.
Millicent Umoru, spokesperson for the Peace Corps, condemned the latest arrest and demanded immediate release of her principal.

Ms. Umoru said Mr. Akoh should not have been detained because he acted as a “responsible citizen” and “submitted himself to authority.”

She added that Mr. Akoh’s health had become fragile following his arrest weeks ago, warning that the police would be held responsible should anything happen to him.

“He came all the way from Benue State after learning that the police were looking for him,” Ms. Umoru said. “He shouldn’t have been arrested for simply being a law-abiding citizen with regards to constituted authority.”

The police spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood, and his Abuja command counterpart, Anjuguri Manzah, said they didn’t immediately have comments about the development Sunday night.

He was almost done with his final year project and he never complained of anything. We are a clique and we eat together; it was all fun, until we found his corpse.”

Air-Force- Adesola Amosu

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has handed over a hospital worth about $2.15m which was seized from a former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu (retd.), to the Nigerian Air Force.

The hospital, St. Solomon Hospital, which is located on Adeniyi Jones Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos, is said to have state-of-the-art equipment including a Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine which costs well over $1m.

PUNCH reports that the EFCC could not manage the property and therefore decided to hand it over to the Nigerian Air Force medical unit.

He said, “The hospital has very expensive equipment including an MRI machine which is very rare. However, we could not manage the hospital so we handed it over to the air force pending the outcome of Amosu’s trial. It is assumed that the money used in buying the hospital was stolen from the air force.”

Other properties seized from Amosu included a house on Adeyemo Alakija Street, GRA Ikeja worth N250m; a duplex at House 11, Peace Court Estate, GRA Ikeja worth N110m; a N40m property located at NAF Harmony Estate, Asokoro base; a five-bedroomed house at Valley NAF Estate, Port Harcourt, worth N33m and a N95m house on Umaru Dikko Street, Jabi.

The Federal Government has also commenced moves to seize Amosu’s house at 50 Tenterden Grove, NW41TH, London worth about £2m.

Amosu as well as a former Chief of Accounts and Budgeting in NAF, Air Vice Marshal Jacob Adigun (retd.); and a former Director of Finance and Budget, Air Commodore Olugbenga Gbadebo (retd.), are currently standing trial before a Federal High Court for allegedly stealing N22.8bn from the coffers of the Nigerian Air Force between 2014 and 2015.

The commission has seized 33 properties they allegedly bought with stolen funds.

Besides the hospital, the EFCC had seized plazas, schools, mansions, farms and a quarry from Amosun, Adigun and Gbadebo.

While almost N2.835bn cash has been recovered from Amosu alone, Gbadebo has returned N190m. Adigun’s wife, returned some money as well.

The document further stated that properties recovered from Adigun were worth N9.6bn.

Calculations showed that the cash and assets which the air force men might forfeit permanently, add up to about N15bn which is more than three quarters of what they allegedly stole.

They have, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Whistleblowers who provide information that leads to the recovery of stolen funds will enjoy the protection and reward from the Federal Government.

Information Minister, Lai Mohammed disclosed this in a statement in Lagos, yesterday, March 19.

The minister said the Federal Government will protect the identity of all whistleblowers, whether in the public or private sector, and also ensure that the information they provide is kept secret. “For those who may have suffered any backlash as a result of the information they provide, their cases will be reviewed and appropriate mitigating actions taken,” he said. Mohammed said the assurance followed presentations made to the Presidential Assets Recovery Committee by concerned citizens and groups about the safety of whistleblowers.

‘Whistleblowers have nothing to fear, because the committee has put in place the necessary measures to safeguard those who give useful information. As a matter of fact, whistleblowers have everything to gain and nothing to lose,” he said.

The minister said any whistleblower whose information leads to the recovery of up to N1 billion will receive five per cent of the amount; that the reward for any amount between N1 and N5 billion will be fiev per cent for the first N1 billion and four per cent of the remaining N4 billion, and that any amount over N5 billion will attract 2.5 per cent reward. “For example, if a whistleblower provides information leading to the recovery of N10 billion, he or she will receive five per cent of the first N1 billion, four per cent of the next N4 billion and 2.5 per cent of the remaining N5 billion. ‘’What we have done by making this information public is to reassure potential whistle-blowers that the plan to reward is real. We are not just saying we will pay all whistle-blowers, but we are letting them know in advance what they are entitled to, once the information they provide leads to the recovery of looted funds,’’ he said.

dino-melaye

Senator Dino Melaye has alerted Nigerians that plans are afoot to carry ficticious allegations against his character.

The Senator thinks this move was being planned to get him to face the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) because he was a major factor that stood against the confirmation of Ibrahim Magu as chairman of the anti-corruption organisation.

Sahara Reporters reports that Melaye who is the Kogi West representative in the Senate never graduated from the department of geography from Ahmadu Bello University.

The report also claims that the DSS was alerted over this but that the security agency covered it up and allowed the man blossom.

“At least three exam officers at ABU, Zaria insists that @dino_melaye never graduated from geography department, DG DSS alerted but covered it up,” the report said.

They said Dino’s name was not on graduation list and further accused him of bribing his head of department.

[OPINION] The Diary Of A Recuperating President By Olalekan Adetayo

$

buhari-resume

President Muhammadu Buhari is fond of holding a blue diary, especially when receiving guests in his office. He may be using it to take note of suggestions made to him by his high profile guests and other national issues. I guess that the diary will contain a lot of information that civil servants will readily classify as “top secret.”

This piece is however not about that diary that I do not have access to its content. It is about my own record of activities since Buhari returned from his 49-day medical sojourn in London, United Kingdom on Friday. The President and a few aides who accompanied him on the trip had landed at the helipad located within the premises of one of the guest houses inside the Villa popularly known as House Seven in the early hours of the day. He proceeded to the First Lady Conference Hall where he met with some government officials before retiring into his official residence.

The President’s wife, Aisha, received him at the entrance first with a handshake. In what appeared to be a second thought, she gave Buhari a hug. For somebody that is recuperating from a serious ailment as confirmed by himself that he had never been that sick, I suspect that they did not enter “the other room” thereafter. Throughout the weekend, the President remained indoors with his family members.

On Monday, we arrived early enough to monitor Buhari’s resumption at his office. His handlers knew we and indeed all Nigerians were on the lookout for that. So they decided to make a big issue out of it. Some presidential aides joined him at home to trek the short distance between his residence and his office. His personal photographer and a cameraman recorded the movement from residence to the office.

On getting to the office, Buhari signed a letter addressed to the National Assembly to intimate the lawmakers of his resumption of duty. Not long after, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo arrived to brief him of developments in the polity while he was away. He thereafter retired to his residence.

On Tuesday, the President’s activities were also light. He granted audience to the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, who came to brief him on the activities of the apex bank. He thereafter signed the instrument of ratification of the treaty on the establishment of the Abidjan-Lagos corridor. He also met with the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki; and the Speaker of the House of Representatives. The President again returned to his residence early.

On Wednesday, the President presided over a meeting of the Federal Executive Council. He threw a banter when he said loudly for all in attendance to hear that he had not seen the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, who answered sharply that he was present. Those who understood the joke laughed. The joke was that Mohammed was wearing a pair of suit that day and the President must have subtly said he was finding it difficult to recognise him in suit. The President again did not stay in his office longer than necessary before he returned to his residence.

On Thursday, Osinbajo presided over a meeting of the National Executive Council which he chairs. The council has state governors as members. Since Buhari had announced on his return that those who wanted to come and welcome him should stay back in their bases and continue to pray for the country, the governors felt they could use the opportunity of the meeting in the Villa to pay respect to the President.

While the meeting was underway, Buhari arrived at about 12.30pm to the admiration of the governors. He exchanged handshakes with them. The Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Abdulaziz Yari, welcomed him on behalf of his colleagues and thereafter presented a get-well-quick card to the President. Not long after he left the venue of the meeting, Buhari again returned to his residence.

On Friday, the President received briefings from both Osinbajo and the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, before joining some top government officials for the Jumat prayers inside the mosque near his office. The governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, and some ministers also joined him. The embattled Acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, was also there alongside the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Lawal Daura, whose agency authored the security report that made Senate to reject Magu’s nomination. Buhari returned to his office briefly before going back to his residence.

Meanwhile, activities at the Vice-President’s Wing of the Villa reduced drastically since Monday when compared with when Osinbajo was the Acting President while the President was away. Apart from a meeting of the Economic Management Team chaired by the Vice-President, there was no big media event at that side of the seat of power during the week.

Maybe Osinbajo was only adhering strictly to one of the laws of power that forbids outshining one’s master. Maybe not.

VIPs’ new found love for female photographers

It is normal for top government officials to have, among other aides, personal photographers whose responsibility is to document their activities pictorially. Most times, men are saddled with this responsibility probably because of the stress involved.

In what seems like part of the change agenda however, I have observed an increase in the use of female photographers as personal photographers to top government officials. This trend does not have anything to do with the gender of the top government officials. Even men now parade female photographers.

The first example is the Vice-President. Shortly after his inauguration, he had a male photographer. But not long after, there was a change. A young lady was saddled with the task. The gap-toothed lady with unique hairstyles is always seen competing with men to get good shots of Osinbajo at events. She appears to be enjoying the job and she is doing well.

Another case in point is the female photographer attached to the Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi. Unlike Osinbajo’s photographer that has a slim stature, Ajimobi’s photographer is huge. She also has a baritone voice that will make people meeting her for the first time to first argue over her gender status. The situation is also complicated because she is always in trousers suits with cowboy-like bowler hat to match. She is a regular face in the Villa anytime Ajimobi visits. Penultimate Wednesday, I discovered that Ogun State Governor, Ibikunke Amosun, has also joined the fray. He came to the Villa for the first time with a slim female photographer that had her cameras strapped around her two shoulders with belts that are common among drummers in the musical bands of the Boys’ Brigade or Boy Scouts. She was bent on getting the governor’s shots from all angles including when he was granting press interview.

Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari; and wife of the Vice-President, Dolapo, also have pretty young ladies as their personal photographers and they are all doing well. If the trend continues, male photographers may need to begin to carry placards with the inscriptions “Bring Back Our Jobs.”

doctor commits suicide

The Family of the medical doctor, Dr. Orwell Orji that jumped into the Lagoon on Sunday, March 19 on the 3rd Mainland Bridge in Lagos have declined comments on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

PUNCH reports that Odunukan Street, Abule Ijesha, Yaba, Lagos State, was enveloped in distress and the family declined comments saying they were in mourning.

Recall that the medical doctor, was being driven in his Sport Utility Vehicle en route to Lagos Island at about 4pm on Sunday.

He was said to have told his driver to stop after allegedly receiving a call.

The unmarried doctor disembarked from the car, headed for the railings at the edge of the bridge and jumped into the lagoon.

Asked what could have informed Orji’s decision, a resident, who did not give her name, said, “I don’t know the cause. All I know is that doctor was friendly and nice to everybody.

“He was single and was living with his mother. You can meet his family members. They are in the best position to explain what might lead to the incident.”

A middle-aged man, who addressed journalists on behalf of the Orjis outside the family’s residence, stated that they did not want to speak on the suicide.

He said the family members were already inundated by the media and wanted to be excused from making comments.

The man, who did not identify himself, said, “We are mourning and we don’t want to see any journalist around. We want you to respect the family. We lost a young man; we don’t have any cause to be happy.”

Orji-Uzor-kalu

Former Abia State Governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu has alleged that he gave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) N500m and supported the election of Former President Olusegun Obasanjo with N100m.

Kalu lamented his treatment by his former party despite being a major ‘stakeholder.’

He added that if the PDP were a company, he owned 90 per cent of its share.

The ex-governor spoke on Monday, March 20 in Washington DC, United States of America, during a dinner.

Kalu, who spoke on many issues, including his trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, fight against corruption in Nigeria, the economy, lauded judges in the US for their courage, urging Nigerian judges to emulate them.

He said the PDP hunted him for his ambition to run for the office of the president in 2007 and for opposing the third term agenda of Obasanjo.

He said, “All of you know that if the PDP were a company, I ought to own 90 per cent of it because in 1998, I gave the party its first N500m. By then, I wasn’t in government. I also gave the presidential candidate, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, over N100m in 1998.

“How many Nigerians would have done that? Yet the same government, the same PDP, took my bank, took my airline, took my oil licence to put me out of business entirely because I proposed that I must run for president in 2007; I also opposed the 3rd term, which they are denying today.”

The Federation of International Football (FIFA) on Monday, March 20 banned a Ghanaian referee, Joseph Odartei Lamptey for life for match-fixing.

Lamptey was already slapped a three-month by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after he awarded South Africa a controversial penalty in their 2-1 victory over Senegal in a 2018 World Cup qualifier on November 12, 2016.

“The official was found guilty of unlawfully influencing match results,” FIFA said in a statement.

The Suspect

A hunter identified as Taofik, aka Kiekie after the head and hands of an unidentified lady were seized from him by residents of Ikoga Zebbe area of Badagry, Lagos State on Sunday.

The suspect was later handed over to policemen from the Area K Command, where operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad picked him up on Monday, March 21.

He was said to have led FSARS officers to where a stockpile of fresh and decaying human bodies were found in a bush.

A resident, David Taiwo, said the incident threw the community into confusion, adding that nobody suspected Taofik was into such acts.

He said, “Taofik has been living in the community for a long time. People are used to seeing him with pieces of wood on his head while riding a bicycle with one hand. Nobody knew his exact job.

“A few days ago, he started going about with sacks that were always soaked with blood. When he was asked what he was carrying, he said he had become a hunter, adding that he was carrying fresh bush meat.

“A policeman, who had observed him, decided to stop him yesterday (Sunday). The man said he was interested in buying the bush meat and when Taofik started an argument with him, he forced the suspect to open the sack.

“He brought out a knife to attack the officer and the policeman raised the alarm. He abandoned the sack and took to his heels. People gave him a chase, caught up with him and took him back to where the sack was. They found a young lady’s head and hands in the sack.”

The resident said when Taofik was queried, he claimed to be selling the parts to some individuals who needed them for ritual purposes.

It was learnt that the suspect claimed that he always cast a spell on his victims before taking them into a bush across a river, where they were killed and dismembered.

A source said, “The FSARS officials followed him into the bush where they found other parts of the lady’s body and some other rotten human parts.”

Another resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, claimed that the deceased was the suspect’s girlfriend.

She added that Taofik would have been killed, but for the intervention of the police.

The Forum of Civil Society Organisations of Nigeria has threatened to shut down the Senate for rejecting the nomination of Ibrahim Magu as the substantive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Rising from an extraordinary emergency meeting of its National Co-Coordinating Council, the forum also noted that the overwhelming majority of the senators who spearheaded the assault on Magu are under various stages of investigation for acts which verge on criminality and corruption.

The group said in a statement: ‘The Senate obviously relying on an obsolete, recycled and unsubstantiated report by the Directorate of Sate Security Services (DSS), went after the EFCC boss, who has since assumption of office taken the President Muhammadu Buhari anti-corruption campaign to the next level.

“The public lynching of a genuinely motivated public officer who has given his all to cleansing the Nigerian augean stables to effectuate in a more stable polity is tantamount to an attack on the person and personality of the occupant of the high office of the president of the republic.

“The misguided and ill-motivated diversionary attacks against the presidency must stop given that the three coordinate organs of government taken together, constitute one integral system.

“We strongly advice that the APC federal administration must avoid the path of self-destruction. We ask that the distinguished presiding officer of the Senate should ensure that the right thing is done.”

The statement signed by the group’s chairman Comrade Friday Maduka stated that Magu deserves visionary treatment and not rejection.

The group threatened to shut down the Senate on Thursday, March 23 and remain there indifinitely until Magu is confirmed.

“We shall without further recourse to the Senate, mobilize the teeming millions of Nigerians from across the social strata of society to shut down the Senate which should be the Peoples’ Senate and not one which is beholden to parochial self- serving interests.

“On the pain of repetition we seriously warn that if our well informed plea is not taken seriously, we shall be marching on the National Assembly on the March 23 and we shall remain there indefinitely until justice is manifestly seen to be done,” the group warned.
