‘Why We Won’t Investigate The Sex Allegations Against Apostle Suleman’– CAN

Stephanie-Otobo-Apostle-Suleman

The allegations of sexual misconduct leveled against the Founder and President of Omega Fire Ministries Worldwide, Apostle Johnson Suleman by a Canada-based musician, Stephanie Otobo will not be investigated by the Christian Association of Nigeria.

PUNCH reports that the organisation is only concerned with denominational issues and not personal ones, under which Suleman’s case falls.

Otobo had accused Suleman of illegal procurement of abortion, threat to life, and attempted murder, following which a Christian group, Concerned Christians, called on CAN to investigate the allegations.

In a statement signed by the Concerned Christians’ Secretary, Mr. Yusuf Dav, the group said there was a need for CAN to investigate the “alleged adultery case with a view to knowing the truth and communicating with the body of Christ.”

However, the CAN source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “CAN provides an umbrella for Christian denominations and it is a bridge between the church and the nation, not between individuals. This issue has to do with individuals, ethics and morals. So it is the denomination that Suleman directly subscribes to that should look into it and not CAN.

“The CAN cannot be involved. What is happening is not an official issue. It is a personal issue. The man has denied the allegations made by the lady, but she insists and we are told that their lawyers and the appropriate authorities are already involved. If it was a matter that had to do with the church now, we would have waded into it. You will be aware that when the man was being harassed because of what he preached and said, CAN stepped in. We declared our position on that but this other matter is a little bit complex.

“If CAN comes out to say the man is being persecuted because he is a Christian, people might say that we are defending what is not defendable, and that the matter is immoral. Also, we don’t have an investigative department that deals with that in CAN. But if he is with the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, then the body can investigate the matter. CAN is an umbrella body for denominational blocs and not for individual Christians per se.”

The Chairman, PFN, Edo State, where Suleman is based, Bishop Mon Igbinosa disclosed he was bereaved and could not comment on the issue.

[REVEALED] Davido In Another Paternity Mess, Woman Claims He Is The Father Of Her 3-Year-Old Daughter

Davido..1-460x460

According to reports, David Adeleke popularly known as Davido is embroiled in another paternity mess as he is alleged to have had an affair with a young lady, Ayotomide Labinjo and that he is the father of her three-year-old daughter, Anuoluwapo.

This latest development followed news that made the rounds last week that he impregnated a 24-year-old Georgia University undergraduate named, Amanda.

PUNCH gathers that the 26-year-old lady had a sexual affair with the singer in 2013 and she got pregnant and had a baby girl.

Ayotomide alleged the pop singer had abandoned her and the baby and has refused to take up the responsibility of “taking care of our child.”

Labinjo alleged she met Davido at a night club in Ibadan in February 2013 where he approached her and spoke glowingly of her beauty. She alleged they ended up sleeping in a hotel that same night. She also alleged that a month later, Davido visited Ibadan again for Gbenga Adeyinka’s Easter show and they hooked up again for a night out and slept together at a hotel in the upscale Iyaganku area of the city.

According to her, communication between them was intact until she told him that she was pregnant at the end of March 2013.

Labinjo said, “In February 2013, I met Davido at a club in Ibadan and he approached me and said he liked me. We became friends and got along. He only came to have a good time then. We left the club in his Range Rover Sports for a hotel around Challenge in Ibadan where we slept together. I left him there the following morning. Before then, I had no boyfriend so I was not used to going out but my friend invited me to the club that night.

“We only met twice in Ibadan and we slept together on both occasions. The third time I would see him again was when I and my mother went to his house in Lagos more than a year after the birth of the baby. He preferred to call me Enitan because that is my other name.

“When I told him I was pregnant at the end of March 2013, he said I should keep it but the following morning, he blocked me from his Blackberry Messenger list. I could not reach him throughout the period I was pregnant. On each of the days we met in Ibadan, he had a police and three body guards with him.

“On the day the baby girl was being named, he added me again on his BBM and I sent him her pictures. He asked me what I wanted and I told him that he should take up the responsibility of the child. But he blocked me from his contact list again the next morning. We named the baby Aanuoluwapo but he preferred to call her Vero and anytime I asked for anything, he would embarrass me.

“My mother was furious about his attitude so she wrote a letter to his father but he did not reply until our lawyer, the late Bamidele Aiku, wrote to him. That was when his father arranged for a DNA test and we went to Lagos for the test.”

But then, a copy of the test carried out at Clina-Lancet Laboratories, Babatunde Jose Street, Victoria Island, Lagos on September 2, 2014, showed that Davido was ‘excluded’ from being the biological father of the child.

However, Labinjo disputed the result. According to her, she alleged she saw Davido giving a ‘big’ envelope containing lots of money to one Alex Sogbola who conducted the test when she entered his office, alleging that the technologist was induced or compromised.

Backing her daughter’s allegations, Labinjo’s mother, Ropo, said she went to Lagos with her daughter to see Davido’s father, Adedeji Adeleke, in respect of the DNA test. According to her, the meeting was arranged after series of attempts to meet Adeleke and following the involvement of her family lawyer. She added that her husband, a professor of sociology at the University of Ibadan, died 16 years ago, leaving her and two children behind.

She said, “I wrote a letter to Davido’s father but there was no reply until our lawyer wrote to him. When he called me, I explained what happened between my daughter and his son and he arranged for the DNA. He said his son told him that he did not know my daughter.

“He later sent his driver to Ibadan to bring us to Lagos for the test. After meeting him, he told the driver to take us to Davido’s house. We met him and his brother Wale, his cousins B.Red and Shina. Shina told him he would not be a party to this (paternity tussle).

“From there, we went to a hospital, Davido was in another car. I was suspicious of the whole set up because there was no indication that the facility could handle DNA test. My daughter was called upstairs with Davido and the child. My daughter was left outside a door but out of curiosity, she opened the door and saw Davido giving lots of money to the doctor after his father had already paid for the DNA test.

“Davido and the baby’s blood samples were only taken so I asked the doctor why he did not take that of my daughter because Davido’s father had told me that he paid for the three people at N65,000 each. They asked us to come back after two weeks but the result came out after seven days. Davido’s father sent a car to bring us to Lagos again for the result. Davido had left the country then. The result showed that Davido was not the father but my findings after that showed that only blood test was carried out and not DNA test.”

The widow said having lived in London before and having done DNA test before, she was sure that the test carried out was not a DNA. She said he had told Davido’s father that when she has the money, she would go to a government hospital to conduct another DNA.

“I have written Chief Adeleke to do me a favour by presenting Davido on the day of the test. From what I know, hair sample or saliva swab and not only blood sample are used for DNA test,” she said.

A visit to Clina-Lancet Laboratories and a chat with Sogbola, the young man who admited he remembered the case and that the test result was genuine.

He said it would be quite impossible for him to be dubious with a DNA result as the samples were taken to their South African branch for testing.

Sogbola said that he had handled all Davido’s DNA tests and so far, he has never had any problems. He also denied ever collecting any money from the music star.

He said, “I remember the case. If I should check the system, I am sure I would still have the details. We also have a sister company in South Africa where the blood samples were tested and if you go to South Africa, you would get the exact same result we gave her here in Nigeria. I have every record and if I bring my records out, I would show you the picture of the lady when she came, the baby’s picture and Davido’s own as well. I remember the lady’s mother.

They came in from Ibadan and the samples were not taken here. It was done in Verdic Hospital in Lekki, they paid for home service so I had to go and take the sample from Verdic Hospital. We gave the result out and the day it was out, I cannot remember if the lady was there but Davido’s father collected the result from me. I remember the girl said she was in school and I asked her where she met Davido but I could not keep asking questions because it was none of my business. He might have come for a show in her school and something happened between them. Even her mother’s ring tone then was Davido’s song. Even Davido’s father said that he had been investing some money in them but they should give him some time to get the DNA done so that they could take charge of the child. That was what he said. Before the test was conducted, the man had been sending money to them. He sent a car to pick them from Ibadan for the test.

“The second DNA that was done for Davido’s baby, Imade, I also conducted the test. I can tell you that I have never collected any huge sum from Davido ever since I have come in contact with him. He has never given me even N2,000 despite the fact that he has money. I don’t know what the girl wants but if it is another DNA, then that is between her and Davido. She can have a re-test anywhere else in the world. I am sure she has a copy of that result. Even if there is a foul play here, would I do it as well with the people in South Africa? If I do a foul play with any DNA result, it would not only affect us here in Nigeria but also our office in South Africa. So if they are suing us here, they are also suing our branch in South Africa,” he said.

Governor-Rochas-Okorocha-360x313

Due to rumours in some quarters by his political apponents that he has recorded achievements in the state by borrowin, Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha has denied such claims and added that his government has spent N50bn on free education without borrowing from the bank.

Okorocha revealed this while briefing journalists at his private residence in Owerri. He added that instead of his administration to borrow money that it had paid money borrowed by previous administrations in the state.

He said, “My opponents have been imagining that I have borrowed money to be doing all that my administration has achieved in five years. The truth of the matter is that this government has not borrowed any money.

“For posterity reasons, this government is not owing any bank or person, any amount except for the bailout fund that N100m is been deducted from the source monthly. Any subsequent government that comes and says that Rochas borrowed is a criminal one”.

Okorocha, however, disclosed that his administration had spent over N50bn on free education since the introduction of the programme. He regretted that his political opponents took the free education programme as a ruse.

He said, “They (Opponents) have taken my free education policy as a ruse. There was stampede at the locations where the students were asked to go and get forms to fill to show they are really indigenes of the State because of the information that none indigenes claim to be Imo people because of the programme”.

[OPINION] Pers By Dele Momodu

dele-momodu (1)

Fellow Nigerians, let me begin by welcoming our dear leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, back home from his medical vacation in London. We have every cause to be thankful to Allah, the Merciful. The Yoruba have a very apt adage for what happened to President Buhari: we should be grateful to the death that wanted to kill us but chose to blow off our cap only. President Buhari is a very lucky man. Indeed, he is a cat with nine lives. From the pictures, we saw of him while he attended to his ubiquitous visitors, it must have been a close shave. I’m happy Baba was given another chance by the Almighty. Not everyone gets that fortunate.

As I wrote before Baba came back, many Nigerians were beginning to give up on his government. They believe this ruling party, APC, has virtually derailed. That they have failed to deliver on the phantasmagorical promises made when we all conspired and collaborated to sack the government of President Goodluck Jonathan. But surresident Goodluck Jonathan. But surprisingly, things began to look better during the short span the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo acted as President. The synergy between him and the team appeared very cordial and proactive. His biggest achievement in Baba’s absence was the effort he put into uniting Nigeria and Nigerians. Everything he did looked too good to be true. Knowing a bit about how things work in the corridors of power, I was troubled about the possibility of a few powerful people misreading and misjudging Professor Osinbajo’s innocent moves and great intentions. It is to the Vice-President’s credit that he did not let those kinds of people detract from the good work he was doing probably because he knew he had the full backing of President for the steps he was taking. After all, as the Vice-President has pointedly remarked he was in constant consultation and dialogue with the President even though Baba had told him not to bother and carry on as he was doing.

I saw in Professor Osinbajo a man determined to rescue this government from the terrible jinx that befuddled its predecessors. I saw a perfect gentleman who wanted to hold fort for his boss by ensuring that things did not fall apart before his return. I did not see a man scheming to take the position of his boss for whatever reason. It was apparent that Professor Osinbajo’s only desire was for the nation to progress and for his boss to meet a better country and continue from there upon his return. This is the type of deputy we all pray for in life. This is the kind of assistant every leader would wish for, and be proud of any day. Therefore a few of us wrote to support and encourage the Vice President but some persons misconstrued our motives. That is no longer news. It was the same way we were pummelled in the past for speaking truth to power. But we must continue to do so because this is our government.

Baba needs to take his time to feel the pulse of the nation. I plead, in the name of Allah, that he listens carefully to the wailers, as his people have labelled those who have been advising government and grumbling aloud about the seeming inertia of this government. He can afford to ignore the messengers but should never discard the loud messages. They can’t all be wrong even if we read right or wrong motives to their action. The truth is that we all want Baba and his team to succeed because his success is the success of the nation. I find it difficult to understand why people cannot appreciate that simple fact. It is not everyone that would be forced out of power and can return triumphantly after 30 years. It is one of those miracles we only read or dream about but never witness. This more so, after four attempts of presidential campaigns.

I was particularly moved by the letter from the Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El Rufai. Here is a well-known protégé of President Buhari. Here is a man projected as a possible successor in case President Buhari decides not to seek a second term. I shuddered as I read and raced through his 30-page missive to our President, I couldn’t believe anyone that close to Buhari could fire those salvos. In that massive letter, I read the bitter truth even if many would read sinister undertones to it. Governor El Rufai really poured out his heart as candidly as decorum permits. Baba should in fact thank him for this. It takes love to openly criticise, even chastise, what is yours. It was an admission of acute frustration in the system that has long experienced systemic failure. Baba should find time to read and digest that letter. I’m sure he would know how to sift the grain from the chaff. Undoubtedly, El Rufai is one of the brightest stars we have in Nigeria despite the many controversies around him. When he speaks, we should not discountenance his wise counsel. I’m reasonably convinced that he means well for the President and our troublesome country.

Many things are being said behind Baba that he would never get to hear or read due to the hypocritical nature of human beings. Only the bold ones would dare speak up and damn the consequence. But anyone who loves Nigeria and the President would stand up at this difficult time to be counted amongst the brave. Baba should maintain the tempo he met on ground when he landed last week. He should encourage Osinbajo to carry on with a system that was already bearing fruits, by delegating more tasks to him. His health challenges, for now, would not permit him to operate optimally and he should not even overstretch his luck. It is too dangerous to overwork when one is just returning from such an intensive medical check-up. I pray Baba and his team, including the Vice President, are already working at that same speed and tempo that we have become accustomed to in his absence and that some of us are just paranoid for nothing.

Nigeria was in a big mess when President Buhari took over the reins of power and in nearly two years, we’ve not even scratched the surface of dealing with the sorry state of affairs that he inherited. Yet, the battle for 2019 elections has already started in earnest. This government has so much work to do in less than two years if the APC is to retain power at the Federal level and this can only be done if all hands are on deck.

Let us pray for President Buhari and praise the letter writers for their uncommon courage in this season of anomie.

A TOAST TO GOVERNOR AMBODE

I know this would come as a surprise to the Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, but that is the whole idea. If a man is doing well, the least we can do is to support and encourage him.

I wish to confess today that Ambode has surpassed my expectations in under two years. I remember getting an invitation to meet with him sometime in 2014. A call came through to me in Ghana from his close aide, Idowu Ajanaku. The caller was very confident that the next Governor of Lagos State would like to meet me at my earliest convenience to solicit my support. I had wondered what support ordinary me could render when the man was amply surrounded and motivated by political juggernauts, especially the irrepressible Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. All the same, I accepted the invitation, if only out of curiosity and left everything to fly to Lagos.

I met Mr Ambode somewhere on Glover Road, Ikoyi. We had never met nor spoken before then. He came across to me like a very simple and humble personality. He divulged his plans and I felt honoured that he consulted me at all. He spoke eloquently about his plans for Lagos. I knew he was going to have to fight a major battle to become the Governor of Africa’s most powerful state government but he had God and the human backing of the former Governor of Lagos, Tinubu. I believe only God can bequeath or take power and so knew he had a good chance. Ambode radiated pure confidence and at the end of our meeting, he saw me off to my car and I wished him well.

He fought a gallant battle to get his party’s ticket. Between Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi, a political wizard, and I, we did everything we could to support him. I was particularly willing and ready to back him up heavily on social media. I couldn’t get over his simple mien and this made his matter compelling for me. Besides, Asiwaju Tinubu, had mentored a few of us while we were in exile in London after the June 12 imbroglio and this was payback time. The general elections came and Ambode won and we were all happy and jubilant.

Since then, I visited him once on a courtesy visit, in company of my best friend, Prince Adedamola Aderemi, and we met the same Ambode I had met before he became Governor, humble and simple. Like the first time, he saw us off to our car, and we chatted freely. On another occasion, I saw him on the Third Mainland Bridge and sent him a text and he called immediately to exchange greetings. But what has impressed me the most is not his interpersonal relationships but the manner he has simplified governance. In less than two years, he has improved drastically on the great Lagos the then Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola handed over to him. Fashola himself had laboured hard to emulate the giant strides of Tinubu in Lagos.

I’m very proud that the three Governors of Lagos since the return of democracy in 1999 have all done a lot to make Lagos such an enviable city and a success story. Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is obviously determined to surpass the humongous achievements of his predecessors, including the great veteran journalist, Papa Alhaji Lateef Jakande, and the legendary military Governor, Brigadier Mobolaji Johnson.

Prince Adedamola Aderemi and I were stunned when we drove recently through Epe, from Ijebu-Ode, where we had gone for the 40-day funeral festivities of Bimbo Ashiru’s mum. The transformation we encountered was truly massive and impressive, more so, because we had passed that same route a few months earlier. Within the Lagos Metropolis itself one can see the stellar work that Ambode is doing but our experience in Epe made us realise that the Governor is touching all parts of the state and not just the showpiece capital.

Ambode’s operational smoothness, typified by the novel but simple way in which he has changed the traffic situation on the Lekki-Epe Expressway by removing roundabouts and replacing them with intersections and flyovers, shows the lack of clutter in his mind and a willingness to innovate and be creative.

Lagos used to be badly polluted but Ambode is working at the speed of light to clean up the environment urgently. Cleanliness is said to be next to Godliness. The Cleaner Lagos Initiative is a bold and ambitious project that seeks to rid Lagos forever of its traditional filth. The plan is to expand the scope of LAWMA and enforce the regulation of the waste management process to the highest international standards. This will also create jobs for thousands of residents.

The vision of Ambode is very impressive and he has started driving a social infrastructure revolution in Lagos. His style is recommended to his colleagues who must think outside the box to improve on their states. While I agree that Lagos is a rich state, Ambode must be commended for spending the resources of Lagos judiciously and positively.

He deserves our support and prayers.

‘I Had To Swallow 66 Wraps Of Heroin Because Of My Son’– Suspect

anukaenyi bob-manuel ogochukwu

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Wednesday, March 15 arrested a 43-year-old Anukaenyi Bob-Manuel Ogochukwu on the suspicion of being a drug courier at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

NDLEA Commander at the Lagos airport, Ahmadu Garba, said the suspect was apprehended during the inward screening of passengers on an Ethiopian Airline flight from Nairobi.

Spokesperson the agency, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, said that hours after he was placed in seclusion and under observation, Ogochukwu excreted 66 wraps of heroine weighing 1.1kg.

That was when he started to beg officials of the agency after denying he had swallowed the drugs.

The suspect, who was returning from Nairobi, Kenya, said his four-year-old son was on hospital admission over a life threatening ailment.

Ogochukwu, an Anambra State indigene, explained that he decided to smuggle the drugs to save the life of his son.

He said, “I teach in a computer school at Onitsha, Anambra State. This is my very first time of having anything to do with drugs. The doctor said that my child has a hole in the heart.

“I met many people for help but nobody was willing to help me except a drug baron. My son is currently at a hospital in Nairobi with my wife who is Kenyan.

“The baron who is from Tanzania promised to pay me $2,000 to take care of my child’s medical bills. I took the decision to smuggle the drugs into Nigeria because I am very worried about the condition of my son.”

The Chairman of NDLEA, Col. Muhammad Abdallah, said the excuse Ogochukwu gave for his involvement in drug smuggling was not tenable.

“No explanation is tenable for committing a crime. Drug trafficking is a criminal offence and the suspect will be charged accordingly. The suspect’s action only complicated his condition because he is here facing a criminal charge while the responsibility of taking care of his sick son now rests solely on the wife.”

If convicted, the NDLEA said the suspect is facing a minimum of fifteen years imprisonment.

Sierra-Leone-pastor-finds-one-of-worlds-largest-diamonds-worth-over-62m1

A Pastor has found one of the world’s largest uncut diamonds, weighing 706 carats, in Sierra Leone’s eastern Kono region.

The stone, a photograph of which was posted on the president’s official website, is being stored in the country’s central bank, government sources said.

A local chief from Kono handed the stone to President Ernest Koroma on behalf of Emmanuel Momoh who made the discovery.

The government plans to auction it.

The presidency said in a statement on that Mr. Koroma thanked the chief who acted as an intermediary for not smuggling it out of the country.

Sierra-Leone-pastor-finds-one-of-worlds-largest-diamonds-worth-over-62m

Diamonds fueled a decade-long civil war that ended in 2002 in which 50,000 people were killed.

Rebels forced civilians in the east to mine the stones and bought weapons with the proceeds, leading to the term “blood diamonds”.

“He (Koroma) underscored the importance of selling such a diamond here as it will clearly give the owners what is due them and benefit the country as a whole,” the statement said.

The stone is yet to be valued but could be worth millions of dollars. Sierra Leone’s gross national income per capita stood at 620 dollars in 2015, according to World Bank data.

The United Nations lifted a ban on diamond exports from Sierra Leone in 2003.

The International Monetary Fund expects the country to export 113 million dollars worth of diamonds this year though the sector remains plagued by smuggling.

Inspite of its size, the discovery is considerably smaller than the Cullinan diamond, which was found in South Africa in 1905.

That 3,106-carat stone was cut into several polished gems and the two largest pieces are part of Britain’s crown jewels.

A 1,111-carat diamond was unearthed in a Botswana mine in 2015.

1.) Says APC Has Failed To Deliver

In very blunt terms, Mr. President, our APC administration has not only failed to manage expectations of a populace that expected overnight ‘change’ but has failed to deliver even mundane matters of governance outside of our successes in fighting BH insurgency and corruption.

2.) Believes Buhari Is Nigeria’s Only Hope Even For The 2019 Elections

Mr. President, it is also clear to many of us that have studied your political career, that so long as you remain in the political landscape, no Northerner will emerge successfully on the national scene,”. “All those wasting time, money and other resources to run in 2019 either do not realize this divinely-ordained situation or are merely destined to keep others employed and rich from electoral project doomed to certain failure’.

3.) Notes The President’s Relationship With APC State Governors Is Frosty

This situation is compounded by the fact that some officials around you seem to believe and may have persuaded you that current APC State Governors must have no say and must also be totally excluded from political consultations, key appointments and decision-making at the federal level.

4.) Criticises Buhari’s Chief Of Staff, Abba Kyari, SGF, Babachir Lawal

The two officials whose titles may enable them function as such generally alienate those that contributed to our success,” he declared, dismissing the Secretary to the Government of the Federation as not only inexperienced in public service but lacking in humility, in addition to being insensitive and rude to virtually most of the party leaders, ministers and governors.

“The Chief of Staff is totally clueless about the APC and its internal politics at best as he was neither part of its formation nor a participant in the primaries, campaign, and elections,”  “In summary, neither of them has the personality, experience, and the reach to manage your politics nationally or even regionally.

5.) Advises The President To Communicate Directly To The Public About His Vision

‘The President should speak to the nation – something akin to a State of the Union address on December 1 or January 1, preferably in a joint session of the National Assembly during which he will explain away some of the perceptions and lay out the national plans, strategies, and roadmap.

6.) Essence Of Memo To Show He Is Distressed About The Government

I ran for state Governor because you directed me to do so, from 2010 when we joined your team, I have no other interest other than your place in history as our President. I believe in your integrity, commitment and sense of duty to make our nation better. I am distressed that our government is seen not to be succeeding mostly due to the failures, lack of focus and selfishness of some you have entrusted to carry on and implement your vision. I am troubled that our own missteps have made the PDP and its apparatchiks so audacious and confident.”

7.) Tells Buhari To Act Decisively

‘You have both a crisis and opportunity in your hands to turn around our country in the right direction. We pray that Allah gives you the strength and good fortune to succeed. This is an honest, frank and objective view of an admirer, a mentee, and a loyalist. I hope it helps, and I apologize if it displeases you. My duty to you is to tell you the truth as I see it. I have no interest other than the progress of our party, our president, our government, and our country.”

Fanta and Sprite

Coca-Cola products, Fanta, Sprite and Coke manufactured in Nigeria are safe for consumption. the Federal Ministry of Health said in Abuja on Friday, March 17.

The ministry gave the assurance after a meeting summoned by the Minister, Prof. Isaac Adewole, to discuss the recent judgment on the case filed by Fijabi Holdings against the Nigeria Bottling Company and NAFDAC.

Adewole explained that both benzoic acid and ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) were ingredients approved by International Food Safety regulators and used in many food and beverage products around the world.

“Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) is the organisation established by Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and World Health Organisation (WHO) to set internationally recognised standards, codes of practice, guidelines relating to foods, food production and food safety.

“In the case of benzoic acid, the standard set by Codex was 600mg/kg until recently reviewed to 250mg/kg and adopted in 2016.

“With reference to the Codex standard and other relevant documents, Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) in consultation with and relevant stakeholders elaborated the standard of benzoic acid in soft drinks to be at 250mg/kg based on the national climatic and storage conditions.

“This standard has been in existence since 1997 and revised in 2008, the levels of benzoic acid in Fanta (1 batch) and Sprite (2 batches) presented by the claimant in the court are 188.64mg/kg, 201.06mg/kg and 161.5mg/kg, respectively,” he said.

The minister stressed that the levels were in compliance with both the Codex and Nigeria Industrial Standards, stressing that the Coca-Cola products manufactured in Nigeria were safe for consumption in view of the following reasons:

“Risk assessment was conducted to ascertain maximum limits of food additives acceptable in foods. This takes into consideration the environmental, storage and distribution conditions as well as the shelf life of food products.

“NAFDAC and SON regularly monitor the manufacturing practices of food industries and conduct laboratory analysis to ascertain continuous compliance with required national standards.

“There was a routine inspection conducted at Nigeria Bottling Company by NAFDAC officers in December 2016, which was satisfactory.

“With reference to the Codex standards, each country or region is permitted to adapt a standard and limit based on country specific scientific evidence such as environmental, storage and distribution conditions,” he added.

Adewole noted that benzoic acid as a preservative prevents the growth of micro-organisms which thrive more at higher climatic temperatures like in Nigeria.

He said that due to the different environmental conditions obtainable in the UK, the standard for benzoic acid was set at a lower limit of 150mg/kg, while in Nigeria it was set at 250mg/kg even below that of Codex (as at time of production of that batch; Codex limit was 600mgkg).

Besides, the minister said that food products being imported into a country must comply with the relevant standards of the destination country.

“NAFDAC has processes in place to ensure products imported into the country are evaluated to ascertain compliance with required Nigeria Industrial Standards.’’

Adewole further said that the claimant did not obtain NAFDAC certification before export; otherwise, he would have been advised on the required standard of the destination country.

The minister advised Nigerians to take medicines with potable water as this would help to prevent unexpected drug-food interactions.

He added that all bottling companies are encouraged to insert advisory warnings on all products as necessary.

Malawian-Airlines-makes-historic-flight-with-first-all-female-crew1

Malawian Airlines made history on Thursday, March 16 with an all-female operated and supported flight from Blantyre, Malawi, to Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania.

The two-hour flight by a Bombardier Q400 aircraft that took off from Chileka International Airport was the first of its kind in Malawi’s aviation history.

All flight-related operations such as security checks, customer service, check-in, air traffic control and cabin procedures were conducted by women.

Even airport staff such as police, immigration and ground control officers were women.

And the cockpit was under the control of Malawi’s first female captain, Yolanda Ndala-Kaunda, and her assistant, Lusekelo Mwenifumbo.

Joseph Josiah, spokesman for Malawian Airlines, told VOA the venture was intended to promote women’s empowerment and encourage more girls to pursue careers in aviation.

“Somehow they think maybe aviation is only for boys [or] it’s only for men because it is too technical. So we are trying to show to them [that] women too are as capable to succeed in these fields.”

Josiah says about 36 percent of the company’s employees are women but that the number is much smaller when it comes to female pilots – only two of the company’s 12 pilots are women.

But Josiah added that authorities have taken deliberate measures aimed at training more women in order to narrow the gender gap.

Captain Ndala-Kaunda says she was excited to have another woman as an assistant pilot.

“I have been flying for nine years. And in the nine years, I was the only woman in the flight bag, so for me I am really happy that there is someone else who can join me and [I’m] hoping that there will even more in the coming years.”

Lizzie Tchokhotho, a duty officer for passenger and baggage services at the airline, told VOA she appreciates the company’s commitment to women.

“I am excited, honestly, to be honored. It’s an honor for women to handle this flight. I have been in this service for long but maybe it was two years ago when we had a similar flight by Kenya Airways, so it’s an honor to us.”

The flight had a two-hour layover at Kamuzu International Airport in the capital, Lilongwe, for a reception where the nation’s first lady, Gertrude Mutharika, met with the crew.

Mutharika said the time is now over for girls to think they can’t make a breakthrough into careers previously considered male-dominated.

The 67-seat aircraft was expected to return from Dar-es-Salaam the same day.

‘APC Must Punish El-Rufai For Criticising Buhari In The Memo He Leaked’– Shehu Sani

ElRufai+ShehuSani

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has been advised to punish Kaduna State, Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai for allegedly leaking the 30-page memo he wrote to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Sani, who is the Vice-Chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, called for punitive measures in a statement he released in Abuja on Saturday, March 18.

He said the leakage of the memo to journalists was an evidence that “logically he (Mr. El-Rufai) is leaking memo to rouse popular sympathy and create the image of “a competent alternative” to “Baba”.

In the September 2016 memo published this week, Mr. El-Rufai told President Buhari that he was losing the vision and the momentum with which APC started the change campaign.

In the 30-page memo, first published by Sahara Reporters on Thursday, to Mr. Buhari touched several areas, ranging from the ailing economy, to the dynamics of the nation’s politics, lack of coercion within the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and the poor relationship between the president and the national leader of the APC, Bola Tinubu, and other party leaders, including the APC governors.

Mr. Sani said it was ironic that while Gov. El-Rufai could not stand constructive criticism, he had the audacity to criticise the president.

“The governor always recommends that our party should punish me for criticising him,” the lawmaker said.

“Now that he has fired a cruise missile at the President through a deliberately leaked memo, he should also be treated the same way.

“He accused me of being disloyal and disrespectful to the President and the party for speaking my mind.

“Now he has done his own cunningly by criticising the President and the party, disguised it as a memo and leaked it out to the press.

“If our able party chair would give me five strokes of the cane for speaking out, the governor (El Rufai) should be given thrice that for ‘leaking out’.

“It’s often said that look at the message and not the messenger, but there are times when you can only decipher the message by looking at the messenger,” he said.

According to Mr. Sani, while Gov. El-Rufai is entitled to his opinion and perception, the contradiction and irony is that he carried out an action he always stood against when criticised.

He described the governor as disloyal and disrespectful, saying: “the difference is that while mine is blunt, his is dubious.

“Secondly, for all the issues he raised against the President, his own is worst in his space of governance both in the existence of cabal or politics of exclusion, incompetence or public perception.

“The difference is that the President is tolerant of criticisms and alternative views.’’

Mr. Sani advised President Buhari to be cautious, saying: “he who keeps a scorpion in his pocket must always watch his groin and he who inherits a cobra should know that it’s not a pet.” (NAN)

justice-ikpi2Justice Okoi Ikpi-Itam, the Chief Judge of Cross River is dead at age 63.

Ikpi-Itam died in the early hours of Saturday after a brief illness.

According to the wife of the deceased, Chief Magistrate Helen Itam, her husband took ill on March 16, 2017 and was taken to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) where he died.

“He complained of feeling somehow in his body and decided to go for check up at a private hospital from where he went to UCTH when the illness became worse,’’ the wife said.

She described her late husband as a caring and loving person who would stop at nothing to cater for the entire family.

Gov. Ben Ayade of Cross River, who visited the family to condole with members, described the deceased as a wonderful and peace-loving person.

Ayade said Itam’s death could be likened to “a brick falling on you from the mountain top’’, considering the wonderful relationship that existed between the judiciary and executive in the state.

“The worst thing that can happen to you is to have a meeting between the executive and the judiciary to resolve all challenges on a good note only to be told two days later that the person who represented the judiciary is no more.

“There cannot be a greater shock than this because we have lost a great legal luminary in the state,’’ the governor said.

He added that the death of Ikpi-Itam has gone a long way toward revealing the nothingness of the world.

‘Why Buhari Can’t Renominate Magu for EFCC Job’– Melaye

dino-melayeThe chairman, Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has said that following the Senate’s rejection of Ibrahim Magu as chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) twice, President Muhammadu Buhari cannot validly re-nominate the same candidate again.

Mr. Melaye, while commenting on the debate in the media about whether Mr. Magu can continue to act as EFCC boss in spite of his failure to be confirmed by the Senate or whether the president can re-nominate him, Mr. Melaye said there was a provision of the Senate rules which would not allow members consider Mr. Magu for the same position again.

Citing Order 131 of the Senate Rules, Mr. Melaye advised President Muhammadu Buhari to consider a fresh nominee who is qualified, in terms of experience, integrity, knowledge and temperament to lead the anti-graft agency.

Order 131 of the Senate Rules states that “nominations neither confirmed nor rejected during the session or within 21 working days in the case of Ministerial nominees shall be returned by the clerk to the National Assembly to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and shall not again be made to the Senate by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

Mr. Melaye, who said that Mr. Magu did not impress anybody including those Senators who would have been sympathetic to his cause during the confirmation hearing in the Senate, urged President Buhari to look for a replacement and avoid actions that may result in violation of the laws of the land.

“Those suggesting to the president that after failing to scale the confirmation process twice, the President should leave Magu to be acting are only recommending violation of the law, disrespect for due process and perpetration of illegality. All these will only undermine democracy and constitutionalism in our country.

“Those drafters of the law who made the provision that the Senate should confirm the nomination of the EFCC chairman did not make any mistake and nobody should observe the law in the breach by getting a person into that office who has not been confirmed. Magu is not greater than the law creating EFCC. Magu is not the last messiah. He can’t be the only competent person for the job out of 170 million Nigerians. Should he voluntarily decline the appointment today, will EFCC fold up?” Mr. Melaye asked.

‘President Buhari Doesn’t Follow Official Working Hours’– Presidency

Buhari-resumes-duty-holds-meeting-with-Osinbajo3

The Presidency on Sunday said revealed that when President Muhammadu Buhari was not in his office, he worked from home when most civil servants had closed for work adding that he does not follow official working hours because he was on duty at all times.

He disclosed this in an interview with Pyramid Radio in Kano State on Sunday.

Shehu was responding to questions on Buhari’s work schedule, since he returned from his medical vacation in the UK.

He said: “I read those analysis and I believe they were mostly wrong. What they don’t understand is that the president doesn’t follow official working hours because he is on duty all the time.

“He has another office by his living room. So, he works from home when most civil servants have closed.

“His (the president’s) reply to the people for their support and trust is to work much harder for them. The president didn’t have a day off or even a light week at all throughout his week of resumption,” he stated.

Shehu added that Buhari devoted the last week to policy issues and not ceremonial events as widely assumed.

[OPINION] Hausa Fulani, Yoruba And The Slaughter In Ile-Ife (2) By Fani-Kayode

$

fani-kayode12

I used to love and respect Governor Aregbesola even though we belong to different political parties.

I knew him to be a proud, strong, unrepentant and inspiring Yoruba nationalist who knew the history of the Yoruba inside out and who was ready to stand his ground and fight his corner with anybody at anytime in defence of the Yoruba cause.

Yet now it appears that all that has changed. Seven years in public office as Governor has softened him and made him lose his nerve, his edge and his fighting spirit.

One wonders what really happened to the fire-brand that we knew as “Ogbeni?” The old Ogbeni was strong but the new one is weak.

His love for power and desperation to foster and maintain questionable and futile political alliances at any cost and price has impaired his vision and beclouded his better judgement.

The old Ogbeni would never have compromised with the aggressors and purveyers of violence in this way and he would have called a spade a spade and been fair to all.

He would not have bent over backwards to appease the Hausa Fulani community and abandon his own people.

The truth is that though I still love Aregbesola I find it difficult to forgive him for refusing to rise up to the occasion and for not defending and protecting the people of Ile Ife and Osun state from the reckless adventurers that have humiliated, assaulted and afflicted them in the last few days.

He has refused to shelter and protect them from the evil scourge that seeks to subjugate them and turn them into village idiots and second class citizens in their own land.

We needed to be consoled and comforted for the outrage and wickedness that was visited on our people by the Hausa Fulani settlers but instead Aregbesola betrayed his own people, went on his knees and begged the aggressors and those that beat, raped and slaughtered them.

I despise anyone that bows and trembles before tyranny and those that take pleasure in killing the innocent in the name of faith, cows, cattle or some strange and misguided notion of ethnic supremacy.

Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the Leader of the Yoruba, once said, “Kaka ka dobale fun Gambari ka kuku roju Ku” which means “instead of a Yorubaman prostrating for a Hausa Fulani it is better to take courage and die”.

Have our leaders in the south west forgotten these heroic words so soon? Has Aregbesola lost his memory?

Since when have we had cowards as leaders in Yorubaland? Since when did we start fearing our own shadows and since when did we start speaking in hushed and muffled tones? Is political correctness more important than the lives of our people?

The truth is that Rauf Aregbesola has forfeited the right to lead Osun state and I pray that the Lord forgives him for dancing on the blood of the people of Ile Ife and wining and dining with the enemy.

Yet sadly the stinking mess does not stop there. I have been reliably informed by the spokesman of Afenifere, Oloye Yinka Odumakin, that up until the time of writing this piece only the sons and daughters of Ile-Ife, including notable traditional rulers, community leaders and other prominent men and women, have been arrested by the police and put in police cells in Osogbo, Ibadan and Abuja.

Not ONE person from the Hausa Fulani community in Ile ife has been detained by the police or security agencies up until now.

Given this, one wonders whether the 30 sons and daughters of Ile-Ife that lost their lives in the conflict commited suicide? One wonders whether they committed what the Japanese call “hari-kari”.

One wonders whether they slit open their own stomachs with a long sharp sword and spilled their own bowels all over the battle field.

I say this because no-one seems to be interested in bringing those that butchered them in the sanctity of their own homes and their own land to heel.

Such a selective application of justice can hardly be described as being reasonable or fair and surely that is not the way to foster better relations between the Hausa Fulani and the Yoruba in Ile Ife or elsewhere.

A note that was sent to me captured the mood rather well when the author said the following:

“There is no Yoruba person who has incited anything beyond putting our case across. We cannot keep quite when our people are being harassed and intimated. Barrister Gbenga Awosode,an Ife indigene has just been summoned to Abuja yesterday. As we speak no member of the Arewa community has been summoned. Our people have been killed on our land and on Arewa land over the years with no arrest made in history. We will not look for anybody’s trouble but if anyone look for ours he will get it double. Yoruba will not die on our knees. Any death that will kill us will meet us on our feet. But before we die……”.

The concern is clearly building-up and the anger is mounting.

Yet despite that the impunity continues. I say this because in the last seven days alone the Hausa Fulani have slaughtered scores of innocent people in Ile-Ife (Osun state), Buruku (Benue state), Arochukwu (Abia state), Malagum (Southern Kaduna) and Igbeti (Oyo State). Must we continue like this?

Our faith, identity and ethnic nationalities are under attack and are threatened with annihilation and you want me to accept it in the name of one Nigeria?

The fundamental question that we must all answer either now or later is as follows: if we cannot live together in peace and unity as one nation must we stay together by force?

Is the unity of Nigeria truly sacrosanct? And if the older generation believes that this is so must the younger generation believe so as well?

Never in the history of our country, other than during the civil war, has there been so much ethnic and sectarian blood-letting as there is today?

And it is the usual suspects and those that the late and great Chief Bola Ige called “the Tutsis of Nigeria” that always spark it off and attack others either in the name of their faith or in their quest to take over and forcefully seize the land of others or in the name of herding cattle and grazing cows.

When one considers this one is constrained to ask the following question: is it a crime to demand for the restructuring of our nation or for the peaceful and equitable dissolution of our very unhappy union?

Can we not at least attempt to be civilised and start learning from others? Must we continue to ignore the voices of our fathers, elders and reverred heroes like the great Pa Ayo Adebanjo and the gallant General Alani Akinrinade who saw all this coming many years ago and who urged us all to sit up and prepare for the worst?

Must everything here be by compulsion and by force? Must some of us be regarded and classified as field hands and slaves whilst others are described as being “born to rule?”

Is this not insulting to the majority? Is it not unacceptable? Is it wrong for people to exercise their God-given right of self-determination? Is that not the basis and the very essence of freedom and democracy?

The wave of ethnic nationalism rising throughout the world, including countries like Holland, the United Kingdom, France, the United States of America, the Russian Federation, Israel, Germany, Turkey, Austria and, increasingly, Nigeria cannot be resisted or played down.

And in Nigeria the more of our people that our collective ethnic oppressors kill, the more that wave will rise.

The right to take pride in our ethnicity and invoke the principle of self-determination cannot be denied.

We reject the concept of globalisation and the enthronement of a new world order. We reject the concept of an artificial, man-made, multi-cultural, multi-religious, mongrel mega-nation that is made up of ethnic and religious incompatibles.

We reject the notion that we must bury our ethnicity, forget our differences, arrest our development, discard our values and enthrone the idea of a strange and complicated hybrid nation where we are expected to live with and accomodate those that hate our faith, despise our people, scorn our values and that rape, maim and kill our loved ones and compatriots in the name of religion, conquest, land, cows and cattle.

The truth is that no force in hell or on earth can stop the rise and establishment of the sovereign state of Biafra, Oduduwa or any other ethnic nation that will one day be carved out of what is presently known as Nigeria.

This is what the German Nazi leader Adolf Hitler once described as “Mein Kampf”, meaning “my struggle”. This is my hope. This is my desire. This is my dream.

In conclusion I call for restraint from both sides in the Hausa Fulani and Yoruba conflict in Ile-Ife. I call for the restoration of peace and I pray that the souls of all those that were slaughtered rest in perfect peace.

God bless and be with the people of Ile-Ife and the Yoruba nation now and forever. (CONCLUDED).

Nnamdi Kanu (4)

The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu, has denied he and his deputy, Uche Mefor, had something to do with a live broadcast of Radio Biafra slated for yesterday, March 19 in the U.S, Premium Times reports.

The IPOB leader who spoke through his lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor on Sunday said he was aware but did not give permission for the launch.

Radio Biafra was slated to go on air live in the U.S. on Sunday. This was disclosed by Leonard Anemene, a leader of the organisation, in a statement issued on Friday.

Mr. Anemene noted that if not for some challenges, the project would have been out earlier but  failed to disclose the exact location where the station will be operating from.
“Radio Biafra has approval and authorization to set up in America according to the U.S. laws,” Mr. Kanu said on Sunday. “But neither me nor my deputy, Uche Mefor, gave approval for it to go on air today in America.”

Mr. Kanu is currently being tried by the federal government for treason based on his formation of IPOB, establishment of Radio Biafra, and his call for a sovereign Biafran state.
