A deaf and dumb suspected Boko Haram terrorist whose name, age and origin could not be ascertained has been arrested by troops of 159 Task Force Battalion in Borno State.

The suspect was found to be in possession of 8 mobile telephone handsets, bunch of keys, two passport photographs, two amulets and a transistor radio.

The Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier-General Sani Usman, in a statement on Thursday, said the troops of the Nigerian Army on Operation LAFIYA DOLE have continued with clearance operations on suspected Boko Haram terrorists locations through patrols, ambushes and raids with appreciable progress in their respective areas of responsibility.

The statement read in part, “Troops of the Nigerian Army on Operation LAFIYA DOLE have continued with clearance operations on suspected Boko Haram terrorists locations through patrols, ambushes and raids with appreciable progress in their respective areas of responsibility.

“These efforts have led to arrest, interception and neutralizing of quite a number of Boko Haram terrorists, as well as recovery of arms, ammunition and equipment.

“The essence is to ensure security in the areas and prevent infiltration by Boko Haram terrorists among the communities.”

The army spokesman said the troops also arrested a suspected Boko Haram terrorist, Mallam Makinta Ibrahim, aged 45 years at Bayemari.

The suspect who hailed from Yaro Grematalti Yunusari Local Government Area, confessed he was the supplier of Premium Motor Spirit and other logistic items to the terrorists.

Usman said both suspects are undergoing further investigation.

The Bauchi State government has ordered the closure of one of its schools after the discovery of secretly arranged marriages among its students, Daily Trust reports.

The order for the closure was contained in a statement issued by Yakubu Adamu, the Special Assistant on Communication to the state Deputy Governor and Commissioner of Education, Engineer Nuhu Gidado.

“I directed the immediate closure of the school on Friday, 10th March 2017 after being notified about the issue,” Gidado said, adding that a committee comprising all directors in the state Ministry of Education, the school authority, teachers as well as the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) of the school had been constituted to investigate the matter.

The discovery of the students’ ‘mock marriages’ was made at the Sa’adu Zungur Model School, a primary and secondary school located in Bauchi metropolis.

Some senior male and female students of the school were said by sources to have been conducting illegal marriages among themselves within the school.

Daily Trust gathered that male students usually pay token sums ranging from N500 as dowry to their female counterparts for their marriages while classmates of the ‘grooms and brides’ contribute money to purchase snacks consumed at the ceremonies.

The sources revealed that male and female students study in separate classes, and the attention of the teachers was drawn to the illegal marriages only last week.

A source said an SS two student organized a wedding ceremony between him and his girlfriend who was also a senior student, and it was during the celebration that the teachers’ attention was drawn when they heard noises which indicated a celebration and rushed to the venue to behold what was happening.

The matter was later reported to the school principal, Malam Ahmed Zailani who consulted the state Ministry of Education.

Despite the non-confirmation of Ibrahim Magu as the substantive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by the senate the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption has advised President Muhammadu Buhari not to remove him.

It was further stated that Magu could continue in acting capacity indefinitely.

PUNCH reports that the committee had resolved to communicate its resolution to the President in writing.

The Chairman of the PACAC, Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), said the resolution was unanimous and that members were of the view that removing Magu would negatively affect the war against corruption.

He said, “I had a telephone conference with all members of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption and we unanimously agreed that Magu is the best candidate in this country for that position and that he should continue acting indefinitely until he is confirmed and there should be no change whatsoever; otherwise, there will be a major setback in the fight against corruption.

“We observed that those who do not want him are those who are opposed to the fight against corruption. So, we are 100 per cent behind him.”

Meanwhile, the Presidency, on Thursday, March 16 said it would not respond to the rejection of the nomination of Magu until it received a formal communication from the Senate on the development.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, stated this on his Twitter handle.

“The Presidency will respond to the non-clearance of Magu as EFCC boss after it receives official communication in writing from the Senate,” Adesina wrote.

Recall the Senate had, on Wednesday, rejected Magu’s nomination for the second time.

According to his family members, Abdul whose writings centered on Human Rights, was killed by unknown persons yesterday and his body dumped on the roadside. He was schduled to have his wedding in a few weeks time.

The Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, has reacted to the ongoing controversy surrounding the health implications of Fanta and Sprite drinks produced in Nigeria.

This comes three days after a Lagos High Court ruled that NAFDAC should give the Nigeria Bottling Company, NBC, 90 days to include on all bottles of Fanta and Sprite that the content cannot be taken with Vitamin C.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in its own reaction yesterday had also filed an appeal and a motion to stay execution of a judgement on Sprite and Fanta soft drinks. Read here

Adewole who reacted in a series of tweets on Thursday directed the National Agency for Food Drugs Administration and Control, NAFDAC, to collaborate with the Standard Organisation of Nigeria, SON in addressing Nigerians on the safety of Coca Cola products.

He also called for an urgent meeting with SON on Friday (today), saying the issue goes beyond the legal aspects of a court verdict.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, March 16 while addressing a meeting of the National Economic Council at the Presidential Villa, Abuja revealed he barred governors from visiting when he was abroad because he did not want the government to move to London.

Buhari said he was overwhelmed by his recent experience in which states, irrespective of political differences, charged their citizens to pray in mosques and churches for his well-being.

“I didn’t want government to move to London. I wanted it to remain here and I am glad it did,” he said.

After narrating what he went through while on that vacation, Buhari noted the suggestion by the governors for him to take more rest, but insisted that he would remain relentless in the pursuit of the interest of the Nigerian people at all times.

This, according to him, was the only way to show his gratitude to the people who, he said, “had given so much to me. I was overwhelmed by the celebration of my return all across the country.”

The Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Abdul-Aziz Yari of Zamfara State, assured the President, on behalf of his colleagues, that they would continue to support his policies and actions which they had adjudged as being in the nation’s best interest.

They also commended the trust the President reposed in Osinbajo, whom they said did not disappoint when he acted as President.

Buhari had arrived the venue of the meeting chaired by Osinbajo at about 12.30pm while it was already underway.

He went round the hall to shake hands with the state governors and deputy governors standing in for their governors one after the other.

The governors also presented the President with a “get-well” card which they all signed.

Itse Sagay, senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN) has reacted to Ibrahim Magu’s woes saying the senate refused to confirm Ibrahim Magu as substantive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) because of his consistency in the war against corruption, The Cable reports.

The chairman of Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) said the senators feel threatened by Magu’s commitment to the job, hence their second rejection of his nomination.

The senate had based its refusal to confirm Magu on a Department of State Services (DSS) report which says the EFCC acting chairman failed an integrity test.

But Sagay said that Magu is a “man of integrity” who is “just too good for the job”.

“They know that Magu has been outstanding in the fight against corruption, and that his achievements have simply been extremely praiseworthy. He’s been consistent; he’s committed. He’s a man of high integrity and his productivity has been high,” he said.

“The only reason they will refuse to confirm him is that they decided to be perverse on this occasion for reasons best known to them. Probably it’s known to everybody.

“Maybe it’s because he’s just too good for the job, and a lot of people are uncomfortable with people like that who are committed and determined to root out corruption from the country. That’s what it is.”

Sagay also noted that President Muhammadu Buhari will continue to appoint Magu to lead the EFCC, even if the senate refuses to confirm him.

“They have done their own part of the job – very good. They don’t appoint, they merely confirm. So, the appointor will continue to appoint,” he added.

Confederation of African Football (CAF) president, Issa Hayatou was yesterday, March 16 ousted by Ahmad Ahmad who hails from Madagascar at the election held in Addis Ababa, Ethipia by 34 to 20 votes.

Controversial US trained journalist, Kemi Olunloyo has disclosed that she has been sent to Port Harcourt Prison for defaming the General Overseer of Salvaltion Ministries, Pastor David Ibiyeomie.

Recall that Kemi revealed she was picked up by the police two days ago.

Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has explained why the Senate refused to confirm Ibrahim Magu as the substantive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The Senate on wednesday rejected the re-nomination of Magu after the Department of State Services, DSS, reaffirmed its position that the acting EFCC chairman will constitute liability to the anti-corruption campaign of the administration because he lacks integrity.

While speaking when he received representatives of the National Association of Muslim Law Students in his office, Sani said, “Magu is a victim of the civil war between in the President’s kitchen cabinet. It is high time the President stood his feet to stop power blocs who are desirous of undermining and subverting his efforts”.

Advising the visiting students who asked him to talk to them on activism, he pointed out that the future of the country belongs to youth who should hold the leaders to account and be responsible.

The activist-senator also urged action against religious extremism and ethnic tension in the country.

One of the Facebook accounts of the second lady who claimed to have been in a sexual relationship with the embattled Founder and President of the Omega Fire Ministries, Johnson Suleman has been deactivated for violating the medium’s policies which included nudity.

PREMIUM TIMES reports that the lady, who identified herself as Queen Esther, said she began a relationship with Mr. Suleman (popularly known as Apostle Suleman) in 2013 before a “catastrophic break-up” a year later.

Ms. Esther’s claims came two days after a Canada-based singer, Stephanie Otobo, told journalists of her alleged amorous affair with Mr. Suleman.

The preacher has since denied all the allegations and just recently barred members of his congregation from further publicly commenting on the incident.

Ms. Esther’s had on Sunday, March 12 revealed she had no evidence against Apostle Suleman but requested that a follow-up story be published to reflect that she has evidence of their affair, a request that was turned down.

“I saw all that was written on the internet, although it is a true story, of which it’s the reality of what is going on now in my life,” Ms. Esther said on Monday.

“If my family were going about bringing out such stories, you should have at least waited before publishing it. Because this is going to attract all kinds of assault to me right now. And going to say that there’s no evidence….it’s just too much.”

A top official of the Kaduna State government had confirmed it received an e-mail from Ms. Esther seeking its protection against Mr. Suleman and “his team of magicians.”

Following a request to Ms. Esther to authenticate the e-mail to the Kaduna State government, an e-mail was received on Sunday stating that she indeed wrote to the government seeking its protection.

But Ms. Esther on that same Monday denied she sent any of the e-mails.

“The email sent to you, it wasn’t really me that wrote it, it’s my cousin,” she said.

“I want to ask you for a favour. I’m actually sick and all that began from the whole story you have heard. It’s my cousin and my uncle that went about doing all that and it’s just as the whole thing is out that I’m now told. And I want to take it up from here.

“It wasn’t me that wrote to the Kaduna State government…I’m telling you honestly, this issue has been dragging since 2014, between me and my family and Apostle Suleman and his family since 2014. The reason why I think they were so frustrated to go to this extent, writing these things is because all their pleas to Apostle Suleman to release me from his bondage has fallen on deaf ears.

“It is evident that all that I’m suffering now started from the time he …. and his threat messages are in my phone. He threatened that I will die…I don’t know who he’s talking bout that will die, but he actually sent all those threat messages to my phone.

“What did I do to Apostle Suleman? That I said I don’t want to be in the church again.That being in the church is risky to me and besides whatever relationship that existed between him and I wasn’t really…I didn’t go into it out of… all because I had a problem and he took advantage of that.

“So what I’m trying to say is that whatever you have put out there, you have to go back and put that there is evidence to prove that he actually threatened me and from the day he threatened me, all these I’m suffering began.”

Ms. Esther demanded a story stating that she had evidence be published first before producing any voice recording or text message from Suleman.

“You need to do whatever you have to do to make anybody who’s trying to criticise this story to understand that I’m the one involved and I have evidence.

“If they have come out to publish something without my consent, I’m the one who have to defend it all and at least I can offer and provide evidence that this man actually threatened me. If he doesn’t want to heal me I don’t know what wrong I did to him.

“He has to be able to tell the whole world why he said I will die. What I did in 2014 other than say I don’t want to continue in this relationship and that I want to leave the church. I don’t think that’s a crime.”

On why her uncle and cousin are using her e-mail account, Ms. Esther said they know everything about her because they had been taking care of her since her illness.

“The evidence is in the text message. Johnson Suleman is too smart to call me on phone to say all those things because he knows his voice can be recorded. But since the evidence he wrote it in a text message and sent to me, times without number, I can only quote from the text message, sent directly from his number.”

Two hours after PREMIUM TIMES’ request for a text message evidence, Ms. Esther called back to say, “The text messages are on my old phone and we have taken it to a repairer,” a contradiction of her earlier e-mail claim that the messages disappeared mysteriously.

“We are going to court on the matter and we’ll provide our evidence in court,” she said.

A footage of a woman who was kidnapped at gunpoint and forced into the trunk of her car before managing to escape from the moving vehicle at a gas station has gone viral.

Police said the 25-year-old victim was abducted from outside her apartment in the Avondale neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama.

Birmingham police said the woman was walking up to her apartment when an unknown man approached her, pulled out a gun, and demanded money.

The victim told the suspect she didn’t have any money, so he allegedly forced her to get back into her car, eventually forcing her to get in the trunk.

The victim told officers that she was driven to multiple unknown places while in the trunk, assuming the suspect was using her card to get money.

When the suspect drove to a gas station, the victim was able to open the trunk and jump out, just as the suspect was driving out of the parking lot.

The victim was able to run inside the convenience store and call 911 for help.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, on Thursday said the commission fixed dates for the 2019 general elections early in order to encourage all stakeholders in the political process to prepare ahead of the poll.

Yakubu said besides the presidential election slated February 16, 2019, INEC will conduct elections throughout the year, including 68 elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The INEC chief spoke at the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room organized by the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre, (PLAC) in partnership with the Department for International Development (DFID) on Thursday in Abuja.

He said by his calculation, there will be one presidential election, 29 governorship polls, 109 senatorial constituencies, 360 federal constituencies and 991 state constituencies

Yakubu said: “The date engenders certainty in the election calendar. You know when the election will hold. So, it enables you to plan. We are particularly interested in this because 2019 will be a year full of elections. We will have the national election and in addition, the tenure of chairmen and councilors of the six area councils will come to an end. So we will conduct 68 elections in FCT.

“Also the tenures of the Governors of Kogi and Bayelsa will also come to an end towards end of 2019. So we start the year with election and end it with election. So there are so many elections to hold and there is wisdom in planning well in advance. The nation must move away from the culture of last minute rush. There must be certainty in the calendar of our elections.”

He said the commission had only fixed a date for the general election but yet to release the calendar and time table.

Uganda’s police spokesperson Andrew Kaweesi and two of his aides have been killed.

Andrew Felix Kaweesi was being driven to work early Friday when his car was attacked by unknown assailants.he alongside his driver Godfrey Mambewa and his bodyguard Corporal Kenneth Erau were shot dead at about 9am on Friday morning, March 17th, near his home in Kulambiro in Kisaasi, police said.

Kaweesi, an Assistant Inspector General of Police served as the force’s spokesman and was one of the country’s most high-profile officers.

He was heading to Uganda Christian University to speak to students but he did not show up.

“He (Kaweesi) was waylaid this morning by yet unknown gunmen. All the occupants of the vehicle were killed,” government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo said.

No further details were immediately available and the motive of the gunmen was unclear.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Emirian Kayima confirmed the murders, adding investigations have been launched.

The bodies have been removed from the scene and taken to the mortuary.

The Founder of Chocolate City Music, Audu Maikori was re-arrested less than a week ago by security operatives in Lagos before he was whisked to Kaduna for a court trial regarding an account he made some time in January.

He posted on his twitter handle  a story of how Fulani herdsmen ambushed and killed six College of Education students in Gidan-Waya, Kaduna.

Although he retracted and apologised for narrating a false account, the Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has still insisted he must be made to face the music.

Below is the sequence of of the events that led to his arrest, re-arrest and bail hearing;

1.) In a series of tweets on January 23, Mr. Maikori said his driver, later identified as Simon Joseph, told him that he lost his brother in a Fulani herdsmen ambush in Southern Kaduna and will be travelling for burial.

2.) “My driver’s younger brother and five others students of college of education Gidan Waya were ambushed and killed by herdsmen yesterday #SouthernKaduna.

3.) “They were in a commercial car going back to school when the driver stopped suddenly under the pretext of checking his engine #SouthernKaduna.

4.) “As soon as the car stopped the attackers shot all 6 students but let the driver who is Fulani go. He gave us these details#SouthernKaduna.

5.) “When we speak we are viewed as trouble makers by the Govt. Well I have seen the pictures and it’s a painful sight#SouthernKaduna,”

6.) Two days later, Kaduna State College of Education in Gidan Waya, where the Chocolate City founder said the students were schooling, issued a statement denying any loss of students to an attack as described by Mr. Maikori.

7.) The Kaduna State Government condemned the misinformation and the reporter responsible for the story in Vanguard Newspaper was arrested and charged.

8.) On February 4, following intense criticism on social media, Mr. Maikori retracted and apologised for posting the tweets in a lenghty article that also offered detailed explanation of how he was misled by Mr. Joseph.

9.) Maikori was first arrested on February 18 by the Police for false information capable to causing religious and communal crisis before he was released the following day.

10.) He was re-arrested on Friday morning, March 10 and transferred to Kaduna but a lawyer and associate of his, John Danfulani on Monday confirmed he had been granted bail after he was arraigned before a Kaduna Magistrate’s Court.

US Police have arrested a 22-year-old US-based Nigerian, Kawan Okoye Gaidowsky, for exposing himself to no fewer than three women while masturbating in a public place.

According to the Redding Police Department, Gaidowsky carried out the act in a parking lot at 55 Lake Boulevard in Redding, California.

The police said Gaidowsky admitted he was driving a gray, 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt when he “pulled up next to a woman in the Shopko parking lot, pulled out his penis and began to masturbate on Wednesday around 8:42am.”

The woman he was referring to, Ashlee Libolt, reported the car’s description and license plate to police.
Following Libolt complaint, officers checked the car’s records and found it was registered to Gaidowsky.

Upon his arrest and interrogation, the Redding Police Department said the Nigerian also admitted to exposing himself to two other female victims.

Sergeant Les James disclosed that the 22-year-old first exposed himself last month and the other was not reported.
The officer noted that the US-based Nigerian was arrested for indecent exposure and booked at the Shasta County Jail in California.
