A report linking Senate President Bukola Saraki and some of his aides to the diversion of about N19bn from the N522bn Paris Club refund has been submitted to President Muhammadu Buhari by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Mr. Robert Mbonu of Melrose General Services Limited was also indicted in the report.

Mbonu is a former Managing Director of Societe Generale Bank of Nigeria, the commercial bank owned by the Saraki family which was later liquidated.

The Federal Government had, in December 2016, approved the sum of N522.74bn to be paid to the 36 states of the federation as part of the reimbursement of the over-deduction on the Paris Club loan from 1995 to 2002.

The EFCC had sometimes in January discovered that the loan refunds were illegally routed through the account of the Nigeria Governors Forum by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Upon receiving the funds, the NGF, in an alleged connivance with Saraki, began remitting huge sums to private consultants who then laundered about N19bn.

According to the report, apart from the NGF, others under investigation include the Relationship Manager to the Senate President in Access Bank, Kathleen Erhimu.

Some others under probe and identified as Saraki’s aides include Obiora Amobi, Gbenga Makanjuola, Kolawole Shittu and Oladapo Idowu.

The report alleges that sometimes in December, Saraki introduced the ex-bank MD, Mbonu, to Erhimu.

Others at the meeting were Saraki’s aforementioned aides.

It added that sequel to the meeting, the sum of N3.5bn was lodged into Melrose General Services Company account number 0005892453, domiciled in Access Bank from the Nigeria Governors Forum on December 14.

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) last week  debunked a claim by flamboyant Senator Dino Melaye that he possesses a degree from the UK university.

Harvard University in Boston, United States, on Tuesday also discredited the senator’s assertion that he graduated from the school.

Harvard confirmed that Mr. Melaye presented himself in November 2016 only for a one-week seminar in leadership and this doesn’t qualify anyone as a Harvard alumnus.

LSE, one of the higher institutions of learning where Melaye claimed that he had earned one certificate or another, also stated that it had absolutely no evidence that the senator received any formal education at the reputable university.

In an email to Sahara Reporters, Candy Gibson, a Senior Media Relations Officer at LSE, wrote: “We have checked our records and can find no evidence of Dino Melaye having any degree qualification from the London School of Economics and Political Science.”

Mr. Melaye had claims that he obtained 7 degrees from several institutions, including Harvard and LSE.

The Federal government is proposing a new policy that will enable Vice Chancellors of various institutions to expel students with as low as 0.5 CGPA.

Minister of State for Education, Professor Anthony Onwuka who disclosed this at the 31st convocation of the University of Port Harcourt, said students with as low as 0.5 CGPA have no business in the University and should no longer be accommodated.

“We must stop to continue housing adventurers, who have no business remaining in the universities beyond the time specified for their studies in the universities.”

“In that wise, it is being proposed that at the end of this academic year, any student with less than 0.5 CGPA should cease to be a student of the university and should be shown the way out.

“The universities must continue to have people who are serious in what they have come to do.

“If you have less than 0.5 in your CGPA, you are out. You are out for good so that the space will be left for those who have come to do serious business.”

One Mr. Paul Nchui has been arrested by the Cross River State Police command for allegedly poisoning the food in a restaurant that has left 2 people dead and over 46 hospitalized in Oboso community of Mbube in Ogoja local government area of the state.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo who confirmed the arrest said that the 35 year-old suspect from Oboso, the affected community in Ogoja Local Government area of the state has confessed to the crime.

The food vendor and her husband, Mr. Edidi reportedly immediately after eating food from their restaurant on Friday, March 24th.

The incident raised serious tension in the state as many suspected that it was an outbreak of Ebola, Lassa or some strange ailment. Confirming the incident, Health Commissioner, Dr. Inyang Asibong said all the affected cases are from a food vendor in Oboso and was actually food poisoning.

“She (the food vendor) and her husband died on Friday following onset of symptoms” Dr. Inyang said, adding that 40 people are currently admitted in General Hospital, Ogoja, while 4 in a private hospital. A statement issued by the police said:

“Mr. Paul Nchui, a suspect who poisoned a restaurant of a food vendor in Oboso community in Ogoja has been arrested. The suspect is in our custody and has confessed to the crime. He will soon be charged to court”.

According to a source, “The suspect has confessed that he poisoned the restaurant to punish the entire community because of the ill treatment they meted on him.

Former aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, has called on Churches to sell the private jets of their wealthy pastors and use the money to cater for the needy in their communities, as a means to fight the urge of many to kill themselves.

Omokri who was reacting to the series of recent suicide reports noted that the government may succeed in policing the Lagos lagoon, but he wondered what happens to several unreported cases of people killing themselves in the villages.

The Central Bank of Nigeria on Monday, March 27 introduced new Forex rates and would no longer trade the naira at N375 per dollar for invisibles, such as school fees, medical bills and travel allowances.

The regulator said Nigerians can now get the dollar at N360 across all commercial banks within the country.

“The CBN [is] to sell forex to banks at N357/$1, while banks will sell to their customers at N360/$1 for invisibles (BTA, medicals, fees, etc),” the apex bank said on Monday.

“CBN directs banks to post new rates in the banking halls of their branches immediately. CBN examiners to visit banks to ensure the new rates are implemented.

“CBN prohibits banks from selling forex funds meant for invisibles to BDCs”t the dollar.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed he did three notable things while he was in Yola and Kirikiri prisons serving a jail term for a phantom coup charges by the late military dictator, Sani Abacha.

He also said there should be no position that a man should find himself in life where he should not be useful to God.

He also posited that the major challenge in life was not how to stay alive but “what to live for and what to live with.”

Obasanjo said this while recalling his experience as an inmate in Yola Prison where he said he met a hardened armed robber and serial murderer, Baba Ali, who he preached to and later sent to the bible school and who has today become a pastor over a Baptist Church.

The ex-President spoke at Shepherdhill Baptist Church, Obanikoro, Lagos, where the Lagos State Baptist Conference held a thanksgiving service to mark his 80th birthday.

Recalling his time as an inmate, Obasanjo said he did three remarkable things, which were that he built a church while in prison; started a farm, converted Baba Ali to a Christian and served as prison pastor.

“I will mention three things that God made me to do when I was in Yola Prison. One, God made me to build a church. It’s very unusual, I asked the authorities for land, they were reluctant, but eventually they gave me land and immediately, we started getting donations. It was started before I left Yola. Wherever you are, you can still be useful to the work of God.

“Secondly, there was a parcel of land, which was not being used for anything, so, I told the prison authorities that I wanted to farm. They were reluctant but eventually they granted me the permission to farm and I grew enough beans to feed all the inmates and the warders. Don’t remain idle, get something doing.”

The third thing he did, Obasanjo said, was at Kirikiri Prison in Lagos where he took over as the prison pastor.

He said he took over as prison pastor because the prison authorities banned preachers from coming in after some white garments preachers who came to preach had helped some inmates to escape by dressing them in white garments.

One of the commanders of the dreaded terrorist group, Boko Haram has been arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Nasir Sani aka Osama was arrested at Ahmadu Bello Street, in the city of Bauchi few days, according to a statement by DSS officials.

Osama, one of the commanders of Boko Haram who had earlier been arrested escaped from prison in October 2010.

Another senior Boko Haram member, Adam Jibrin, was arrested in a market in Gombe.

The Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu has stated that his principal was not involved in any certificate scandal, PUNCH reports.

Shehu was reacting to a story titled “Prominent Nigerians with certificate scandals” where Buhari; former President Goodluck Jonathan; former Senate President, Evans Enwerem; former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Salisu Buhari; Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose; and a national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, were listed among others in the publication.

But Shehu said Buhari did not fit into the categorisation because he had no certificate scandal.

He however admitted that the issue of certificate was raised against the President among other allegations ahead of the 2015 presidential election which he won.

The presidential spokesman said the issue of Buhari’s certificate was raised by those who wanted him disqualified from the presidential race.

He said the issue was however successfully dealt with before the election, saying the President has no certificate case hanging on his neck.

The statement read, “We wish to emphatically state that President Muhammadu Buhari does not fit into categorisation of leaders with certificate scandals because he bears none that is on available records.

“In the course of the contest for the office of the President in 2015, a number of wild, untrue and malicious allegations were made against him in order to stop him from contesting for the office in the election.

“The issue of certificates was raised against him but the campaign successfully dealt with the allegations by providing evidence that not only was he qualified to run, he had a far higher academic qualification than is required by the constitution. As a result, he went on to run for the office and eventually win.”

The Nigerian Customs Service has impounded 223 vehicles 13 of which belong to a Kano State Senator.

Comptroller-General of Customs Compliance Task Force also said that it seized other items, including foodstuffs worth N269.5m in Kano and Jigawa states within eight months.

The Task Force Zonal Commander, Mr. Bala Dole, made this known in an interview in Kano on Monday.

He said the vehicles, belonging to the said senator were; 12 new Toyota Hilux and one Land Cruiser Jeep.

Dole, who declined to name the senator, said the 13 vehicles were trailed from Maigatari in Jigawa State following an intelligence report.

“Based on the intelligence report, the vehicles were 30 in number but we were able to trail 13 of them 12 of which were hidden in the senator’s compound.

“We sealed the house and retrieved the vehicles and they are now in our custody,” Dole said.

He said the other items the task force confiscated during special operations included 9,757 bags of rice, 2,916 of foreign spaghetti, 2,770 cartons of foreign vegetable oil and 999 cartons of macaroni.

He said others were; 889 veils of second-hand clothes, 50 used school bags, 110 cartons of new foreign shoes, 956 bags of mosquito coil and six fairly used cars.

“The total value of the seizure made by the task force since it was established in July 2016, excluding the 13 senator’s vehicles, is N269.5m.

“We have yet to determine the cost of the 13 vehicles belonging to the senator,” he said.

In order to prove all doubting Thomases wrong, Senator Dino Melaye has shared a copy of his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Certificate.

The document states that he started the programme on 9th July 2000 and finished on 8th July 2001.

Recall the Vice Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, Prof. Ibrahim Garba, affirmed that Melaye graduated from the institution with a 3rd class in Geography in the year 2000.

Villagers in eastern India rescued a newborn baby girl who was found buried alive, officials said Monday, March 28, the latest case in the country highlighting the problem of female infanticide.

The girl — believed to no more than six hours old — was left to die in a shallow sand pit in a field when a passerby spotted her feet poking through the ground on Saturday.

The baby, found in Jajpur district in impoverished Odisha state, was rushed to hospital where she is under observation, officials said.

“She is doing fine and all her parameters are normal. She is a full term baby, weighing around 2.5 kg,” chief medical officer Jajpur district Fanindra Kumar Panigrahi told AFP.

“Her umbilical cord was intact and body was still covered with vernix.” he said.

Hospital Staff have named the girl Dharitri, a Sanskrit word meaning “the earth”.

The girl will be handed over to the state-run child welfare committee after she is discharged from the hospital.

Police told AFP that they suspect the newborn was either abandoned by her parents because of her gender or the mother had been an unmarried woman.
