President-Muhammadu-Buhari

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the return of President Muhammadu Buhari from the United Kingdom as the return of a man “with new vigour” to fix the country’s challenges.

After a meeting with Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, and other party members, Buhari said his deputy will continue running the affairs of the country while he continues his rest.

But in a statement on Friday, March 10, APC Spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, said Buhari was back to fulfill the party’s promises to Nigerians.

According to his statement, “The party believes that President Buhari is now well rested and has returned with new vigour and optimism to fix the challenges facing our people and fulfil the promises our party made to Nigerians during the 2015 elections.

“We thank the president for following due process and properly handing over to his deputy, vice-president Yemi Osinbajo and thereby saving the country the needless controversies and crises that we experienced in the past.

“The Party also commend the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo for competently holding fort on behalf of Mr. President and for his loyalty and commitment to the change agenda of our party.

“We thank Nigerians and all men and women of goodwill who have been praying for the health and safe return of the President and note that the government is fully committed to the Party’s manifesto of Change, couched on true transformation in every area of national life.”

Chocolate City Founder, Audu Maikori was re-arrested yesterday, March 10 by security operatives and whisked to Kaduna just 22 days after he was released.

His arrest might not be unconnected to his tweets that some Fulani herdsmen killed students of a College of Education in Kaduna as narrated to him by his driver, a story which he later discovered to be false and promptly retracted and apologised for.

Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai had during the Lagos Social Media Week insisted he would be punished for his inciting tweets.

Below are how Nigerians are reacting to his re-arrest;

Apo Six

It was on Thursday, June 17, 2015 when Policemen opened fire on six Igbo traders in Area 11 Garki, Abuja now widely known as Apo Six Killings.

Justice Ishaq Bello of a High Court in Maitama, Abuja on Thurday, March 9 sentenced two police constables, Ezekiel Achejene and Emmanuel Baba to death for the murder of five traders at the Apo Mechanic Village- Ifeanyi Ozo, Chinedu Meniru, Isaac Ekene, Paul Ogbonna, Anthony Nwokike and the girlfriend of one of them, Tina Arebun.

Below is the sequence of events that led to the killing as compiled by PUNCH

1.) The six victims, all traders at the Apo Mechanic Village and a girlfriend were driving home after a night out in Abuja on June 7, 2005, when they encountered a team of policemen on patrol.

2.) The victims allegedly had a scuffle with a senior officer, Danjuma Ibrahim, whose advances were allegedly turned down by Arebun, the only female among the six.

3.) Ibrahim had allegedly reported to the policemen at the checkpoint on Gimbiya Street, by Ahmadu Bello Way, Apo, Abuja that he sighted a gang of armed robbers in the area.

4.) The spare part traders were stopped in the Peugeot saloon car they were riding in when they got to the checkpoint.

5.) Policemen at the checkpoint opened fire on the six traders and four died on the spot. The two remaining ones were later shot dead in the early hours of the following morning under the guise that they were trying to escape.

6.) The policemen later proceeded to cover up the incident by branding the victims as armed robbers who engaged them in a shootout. Two locally made pistols, two live cartridges, two expended cartridges, two daggers and one cutlass were displayed purportedly recovered from the victims’ car.

7.) Following the uproar over the case, police high command set up a Special Investigation Panel, which indicted six police officers over the killing -Danjuma Ibrahim (Deputy Commissioner of Police), Othman Abdulsalam (Chief Superintendent of Police), Nicholas Zakaria (Assistant Superintendent of Police), Ezekiel Acheneje (Police Constable), Emmanuel Baba (Police Constable) and Sadiq Salami (Police Constable).

8.) All indicted policemen and officers were charged on nine counts of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide, except, CSP Abdusalam, the Divisional Police Officer of Garki, who mysteriously disappeared from his cell in the police headquarters and never appeared in court. He has been in hiding since then.

9.) A witness told the court during trial that Ibrahim personally shot at the victims. But Justice Ishaq Bello in his judgement said contradictions in testimony of witnesses and the fact that his fingerprint was not taken after arrest made it impossible to establish his culpability.

10.) The court established that the two last victims were shot by Achejene and Baba, which was the basis for their conviction. No one was convicted for the death of the first four victims.

ayo-fayose

Despite the return of President Muhammadu Buhari in the early hours of yesterday, March 11, Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose has called on Nigerians to not stop praying for the President’s full recovery.

He said Buhari still had the task of fixing the many problems plaguing the country.

The governor made the call on Friday, March 10 while signing a condolence registrar in honour of the late ex-Military Governor of the defunct Western Region, General Adeyinka Adebayo in Ado-Ekiti.

He said: “What is important is that for the President to stay away for that long, anybody would feel concerned about it. So, we pray that may God give him the strength to do his job.

“He has a job to do, so we will continue to pray for him to be well to fix the economy and put food on our table. We cannot task a sick man on these challenges, we will continue to pray for him to be well and bring the Dollar back to N200 or less.

“We don’t have power over life and we have to continue to thank God that the President is alive strong and back. Anybody can be sick whether you are young or old. What is important is that God should give him the strength to be alive and do what we expect him to do for our country.

“I just leant that he said he would be going back in a few weeks’ time, we have to keep our fingers crossed.

“There is no doubt that age is not on his side like every other person and there are many health challenges that come with ageing.

“What is best is that we continue to pray for him because the Holy books say we should pray for our leaders in authority.”

[OPINION] From London To Abuja In 50 Days: Buhari’s Return By Reuben Abati

$
0
0

Dr-Reuben-AbatiThe cities of Daura -President Muhammadu Buhari’s home town, Kano – his political base, and Kaduna -where he has a home, and where the aircraft that brought him from London landed early Friday, March 10, as well as other parts of the North saw the people trooping out to jubilate and thank God for his safe return.

I noticed that there was no such jubilation in the entire South West, the East, the Middle Belt and the South South. This is understandable.

Too many cynics and mischief-makers in these other parts of the country had expected the worst and they had been busy promoting the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo as a better man in the President’s seat. The manner in which President Buhari’s absence from the country seemed to have divided the country emotionally is perhaps one of the saddest outcomes of that experience. It was the longest period any sitting President in Nigeria would stay away from office. But the really sad news is that it again projected the ethnic differences within the country.

The fact that Buhari’s absence was due to illness raised anxieties on all fronts about the economy and the country’s political prospects. Whereas President Buhari had dutifully and lawfully excused himself and delegated power to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who became Acting President, this created fresh and troubling problems on the political front. Mischief-makers began to promote Osinbajo: comments appeared in the social and traditional media, praising every step he took while his boss was away.

Meanwhile, his boss received more bashing than was the case at any other time since he assumed office. Whoever managed or instigated that mischievous media messaging process did Osinbajo a bad turn. One of the golden rules of power is this: Never outshine the master! It is in fact the first law of power.

While Buhari was away, Osinbajo did, wittingly or unwittingly, and how serious that was became obvious when a Buhari aide had to inform Nigerians that there is a single Presidency and that Osinbajo, as Acting President took instructions from his boss in London.  It was a sorry moment, with the President’s men trying to pull back the Acting President’s men, and struggling so hard to preserve the President’s image and hold on to  power.

This is why Sai Baba’s return is a game changer, and it probably explains why his kinsmen trooped onto the streets in joy.  I wouldn’t know if he has returned against doctor’s advice, but we all know that he may still have to go to back to London for further tests as he himself has announced in a statement, but coming back at this time is a deft political move. Things were beginning to get so bad, power was beginning to slip out of Buhari’s hands. As the Osinbajo persona gained traction, Buhari’s ratings further nosedived.  When Buhari arrived this morning, he changed the narrative. And watch every step that he took: he met with the Executive Council of the Federation: a smart way of re-asserting control. He shook hands with some Governors.

He also issued a statement, which he personally signed. Within a few hours of his return, he took steps that left no one in doubt that he intends to remain in charge. I have seen power-game upfront at the highest level. Nobody should be deceived. If there is any cabal in that Aso Villa at this time, its members must be walking with a special bounce. There was even a smiling competition among Buhari’s men in the Villa today. Look at the photos. Some people smiled so much if their teeth had fallen off in the process, they would have gladly attributed it to occupational hazard.

One of the laws of power is that you don’t take power and then allow other people to seize the advantages. Buhari’s return has served one strong purpose: to hold power and keep it where it belongs. But in another strategic move, the man of power has made it clear that his Vice President will continue to act while he recuperates. That is brilliant: Looks like these guys in the Villa are beginning to learn how to play chess. With Buhari inside the Villa, even for just two weeks, before he returns to London if he does, he would have enough time to change the calculus of power, including the traffic that may have built up in another direction in his absence.

But Sai Baba don spoil business for prayer warriors oh! I am actually wondering why I did not listen to those friends who advised that we should also organize a get-well prayer session for Buhari. You know-you get-you-understand what I mean…that kind of prayer session that is an investment, with a well-thought-out proposal. You get sponsors, make some money on God’s behalf, publicise the prayer programme so well every important Government official will notice.

I thought this was thoroughly opportunistic, making money and enjoying privileges off another man’s illness! But may be when Baba goes back to London, I will weigh the options differently. More so as I can see with my own eyes that those prayers may have worked. Buhari’s return, in this heavily spiritual country, is probably clear evidence that God answers prayers! And let us not blame those who think so, because there are indeed people in this same country who wanted Sai Baba to remain in medical exile. But at least, now that the President is back, the prayer investors and their notice-me sponsors and those whose political careers depended on the-President-phoned-me-from-London moments will get off our back.

President Buhari has told everyone who may be planning a trip to Aso Villa on a welcome-back visit to please stay off. Hi-an! Thank you, sir. Let people stay where they are, I beg, and do their work instead of trooping to Aso Villa to do eye service. And nobody should send gifts: in our tradition, when a man is recuperating, it is normal to send packs of tea (and Baba likes his tea!), cartons of milk and fruit juice and biscuits, to ease the recuperation process. I beg make una keep una tea, and other Greek gifts, Baba no want. And I think people should be told not to place any adverts in the newspapers welcoming President Buhari back to Nigeria.

The man I sympathise with is Professor Yemi Osinbajo. He will now have to tone down, roll back and generally stay in the shadows, even with his boss saying he can carry on while he is still recuperating. How can he carry on when the boss is back and on his feet? Can he possibly bear the title of Acting President when the President is back in the Villa? He and his team would have to do a quick re-set, both inside the Villa and in the media. Right now, I do not envy them…as they manage the banana peels of power.

And now that President Buhari is back, it would be most appropriate to draw his attention to many things that happened in his absence. Baba, while you were away…some Ministers were busy making noise, some Nigerians were busy wailing, some of them said you…you… the recession got worse, the Naira effectively became a yo-yo, one actress left her husband and started grumbling about STD, one house-boy in Big Brother Naija tried to get fresh with TBoss and got booted out, there was two- fighting in the PDP…No, I think I should let you enjoy your first day back home in 50 days. Here is a Yoruba song, which the wailers of the South West refused to sing to welcome you back. Enjoy it:

Kabo o o,  kaa-aa-bo.

Kaaabo ooo, kaabo

Sai baba to t’ajo de o,

Kaa bo o

Baba wa to t’ajo de o, kaabo

I conclude: The fire next time…

Shettima-cryA Senior Special Assistant to Governor Kashim Shettima has died in an accident on the Abuja-Kaduna highway on Friday, an official has confirmed.

The victim, identified as Farouk Musa, died after a car intercepted ‎a Hilux in which he was driving in the convoy of Mr. Shettima.

Mr. Musa was until his death, Senior Special Assistant on Intergovernmental Affairs, resident in Abuja and interfacing between the Borno State Government and ministries, agencies and departments of the federal government as well as foreign agencies and embassies.

Only the Hilux carrying the deceased was involved in the accident.

A government official who was at the scene said the accident was caused by a Prado 4-wheel drive which tried to make a U-turn on the highway. The Prado was said to be coming from opposite lane (from Abuja) and decided to make a fast U-turn onto the road leading to Abuja from Kaduna.

The pilot leading the governor’s convoy was said to have avoided the Prado while the ill-fated vehicle next to him tried dodging towards the right, but the vehicle skidded off the road and the driver lost control resulting in the Hilux turning upside down as a result of which occupants sustained various degrees of injuries

The deceased, aged 45 years, was said to have been thrown out the vehicle following which he sustained internal injuries.

Governor Shettima led the convoy back to Kaduna and the victims were first taken to St Gerald hospital where the governor’s aide was pronounced dead on arrival in the presence of Mr. Shettima. The governor was said to have aborted his trip and requested the transfer of the ill-fated vehicle driver, Mr. Modu, who was moved to Barau Dikko Hospital, also in Kaduna.

Sources said the late Mr. Musa was very close to Governor Shettima as they related for many years. The deceased was a federal civil servant before his appointment by Mr. Shettima during his first term.

He is survived by a wife and three children.

Prince Michael Franklin, the Paternal first counsin to Queen Elizabeth II has been given the title, Adaidaha of Efik Eburutu by the Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V.

The Obong, who is a Treaty King and Grand Patriarch of the Efik Kingdom, also conferred the President of Brazzaville Foundation, Mr. Johnnie Olivier, with the same title in recognition of his global peace initiatives.

The duo was led to the palace of the Obong by a former governor of Cross River State, Mr. Donald Duke, alongside a former presidential adviser, Senator Florence Ita-Giwa and the Chief Executive Officer, Henshaw Capital Partners, Chief Barbara Etim-James.

At a grand ceremony, which attracted well meaning sons and daughters of the Efik Kingdom, including a former Managing Director of Tinapa Business and Resorts, Chief Bassey Ndem, and Chief Asuquo Ekpenyong, the Obong said the conferment was as a reminder of the relationship between the Efik people and the British Colony.

The Obong gave certificates and sceptres to the recipients with specific charge on Prince Franklin to show it to the English monarch.

Introducing the recipients earlier, Duke said Olivier and Franklin had been involved in ensuring global peace in troubled areas.

Duke said, “There is hardly any peace move in the continent of Africa that Olivier does not work behind the scene. He finds alternative solutions to conflict resolution. Played crucial role in South Africa during the apartheid era and was involved. Prince Franklin is his ally.”

Chairman of Obong of Calabar Executive Forum, Chief Asuquo Ekpenyong, said the conferment was a re-enactment of the relationship between the Efik and Britain.

“The event is significant. It is not too common to confer an Efik title on foreigners. It is a re-enactment of the relationship between the Efik, Britain and peace. What we have seen is going to bring to the Efik and its people a positive relationship. We have by this shown that we still recall the past,” he said.

Asuquo, however, urged the visitors to visit the palace at least once every year.

In his response, Price Franklin promised to visit the palace regularly, adding that they would extend their humanitarian roles to other parts of the world.

‘PDP Can Still Rule For 60 Years’– IBB

IBBFormer military President Ibrahim Babangida (IBB) says PDP can rule for 60 years “provided it can put its house in order”.

IBB said this on Saturday when he received leaders of the party at his Hilltop mansion in Minna, Niger state capital.

He claimed that PDP is the only political party, whose presence had been felt, known and accepted by the people.

“PDP’s presence is felt not only in Abuja or Lagos, but down to the lowest level,” he said.

“If you go to the grassroots, the ordinary man will talk about PDP; that is the asset the party has and should use to spring back to reckoning.

“Already, it is accepted and known. All you have to do is work harder and try to convince the people back to your fold.”

He also re-echoed his support for a two-party system, and declared that it was the best option toward deepening democracy.

“Gradually, my earlier suggestion about the practice of a two-party system is gradually coming to the fore in the country,” he said.

“In 1999, when I was advocating for a two-party system, some of my colleagues had their doubts, but I told them that it provides a choice, which is the first essence of democracy.”

Earlier, Jerry Gana, head of the delegation, had urged the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to allow opposition political parties to always voice their opinion on issues.

Gana also advised the APC to allow rival parties to develop so as to offer Nigerians other options “at all times”.

“The presence of opposition is key to democratic growth; we must allow Nigerians to listen to the other side,” he said.

UK-Based Nigerian Professor Reveals The Nature Of Buhari’s Sickness

A certified physician in Anatomic Pathology from London and Ireland, Professor Femi Williams has disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari is suffering from anaemia.

The professor revealed this in an interview with The Nation in an interview and added that it was the reason why the President got blood transfusion during his medical vacation in the UK.

Buhari himself admitted he had transfusion in London, after he returned to Nigeria following a 49-day absence last Friday.

“We now have a pretty good idea of diagnosis, which is now comprehensive or good enough to say that the diagnosis of President Buhari’s illness is anaemia,” Williams said.

“You cannot be transfused if you don’t have anaemia”, he said.

Williams also claimed that the anaemia could have been triggered by self–medication.

Buhari during a closed-door meeting with Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo shortly after arrival, spoke about self-medication.

He called it “one of our terrible things.”

“We have to trust our doctors more and trust ourselves more because over there they only take drugs when it is absolutely necessary. They don’t just swallow everything,” he said.

Professor Williams explained: “The clinical history given by Mr. President that for the past 18 months he had been lethargic and feeling tired prior to his vacation is consistent with tiredness due to anaemia.

“Regaining his strength after transfusions that facilitated his return home suggests that the anaemia had been corrected successfully.

“There is therefore a preliminary diagnosis of anaemia meaning insufficient blood in the circulation.

“When this happens many organs including the brain, heart, liver, kidneys and lungs are starved of oxygen that is carried by blood to all parts of the body for efficient functioning of the person.

“Sudden loss of blood as in road traffic accidents could be fatal. In this case, the anaemia has been insidious and gradual over time.”

Continuing, Prof Williams said: “The question that arises in the absence of information, which is understandable, is the cause of the anaemia.

“The only information that can be gleaned from the Presidents history on arrival is his admonition against self medication. By so doing is he giving us some more relevant information that he had been told in London?

“This is the first time that a President advises that all citizens should trust their doctors and refrain from self medication. Is it possible that his anaemia is drug induced or drug related and that investigations in London revealed this? We do not know. If this is true common pain relieving drugs like Panadol may cause kidney damage and give rise to anaemia for which he received transfusions.

“Alternatively certain drugs also cause liver damage and anaemia but this is unlikely in his case since he was not jaundiced.”

But he also admitted that “there are so many other causes of anaemia that cannot be dealt with here.”

“Of relevance to our last observation is the possibility that this may be anaemia related to some type of cancer that must be ruled out. Looking at the photos on arrival there is one suspicious positive finding and that his loss of muscle mass on the face in the area of the zygomatic arch below the ears.

“This is either due to some cancer somewhere or due to aging.”
