The Super Eagles of Nigeria yesterday beat the Bafana Bafana of South Africa 2-0 in this year’s Nelson Mandela Challenge Cup.
The match, which saw the Super Eagles dominate the first half, came lively after 27 minutes when a short from Nigerian midfielder, John Ogu; hit the wood work of the post. It was one of the many chances the Nigerian team missed.
At the second half, Coach Stephen Keshi made some changes bringing in Uche Nwofor and Victor Moses for the ineffective Shola Ameobi and Sunday Mba which changed the game dramatically.
The changes Keshi made paid off at the 48 minute when the newly introduced Uche Nwofor scored through a back heel after a goal mouth scramble in the 18-yard box of the South Africans. Nwofor however, made it two when he coolly slotted home a cross from Ahmed Musa at the 67 minute to make it two.
All effort by the South Africans proved abortive as the Eagles held to the two goals lead up until the final whistle. The South African team has only beaten the Super Eagles once after about nine encounters, with Nigeria winning majority of times.
