AN 18-year-old Bauchi-based housewife, Aisha Jibrin, has been arraigned before a Bauchi Chief Magistrate’s Court for allegedly pouring hot water on her husband which led to his death.
The woman was said to have poured the hot water on her late husband, Mohammad Auwal Ladan, as a result of an altercation between them following an accusation raised against her by the man that she procured an abortion with his consent.
This led to her receiving beatings from the deceased, who was also said to have complained over her habitual watching of home videos, thereby neglecting her prayers.
The woman was said to have broken one of her front teeth from beatings received from her husband, provoking her to decide to deal with her husband in her own ways.
It was learnt that on Wednesday, October 8, 2014, the estranged wife poured hot water on her husband ,who was bathing then ,at about 5.00 p.m, at their Jahun residence in Bauchi metropolis.
A close family friend, who pleaded anonymity, informed that problem started for the woman, who was newly-wedded, when her husband got the news that his wife had procured an abortion.
According to the source, “He was so very livid that he pounced on her. Auwal, who was a civil servant, hit his wife with his hand up to the extent that she sustained serious injury on her mouth and eventually broke one of her front teeth.”
The issue was later settled for them, according to the source, but the woman got further frustrated when her husband returned from work and met her watching home video.
“On that fateful day when Auwal came back from work, he met Aisha watching home video. He asked her if she had said her prayers and she said no. He asked her why and she said nothing was the reason.
The source said it was after this that the deceased went to have his bath, when the frustrated wife pour hot water on her husband to vent her anger him and ran away.
“She just opened the bathroom door as he was taking his bath and poured the hot water on him and ran away. The husband shouted and writhed in pain, and was later rushed to the hospital. Four days later he was brought back home where he died,” he said.
That was when the deceased’s brother, Nasiru Mohammed, reported the matter to the police at the Dutse Tanshi police station in the metropolis and the woman was arrested and charged to court.
The woman, according to the Investigation Police Officer (IPO), Abdulahi Adamu, was charged with culpable homicide punishable under Section 224 of the Penal Code.
Meanwhile, the Chief Magistrate presiding at Chief Magistrate’s Court 7, where the woman is being arraigned, Isa El-Shuaibu, has adjourned the case to Tuesday, October 28, for further hearing.
